For prior conversation in anticipation of the show see /forumtopic-997073/persona-5-tv-series-anticipation

So just saw the first episode. Insofar as the comments thread is concerned there are complaints about pacing, which I figured was going to happen. As I have said already, trying to cram the entire game into 2 seasons of anime is going to be impossible, let alone a single cour.

That being said, I felt like they did a good job covering the important parts. Yes it felt a bit rushed, but considering the time it took about 3 hours or so of cutscenes in the game just to get to the point we reached in the anime, I feel like that is to be expected. Nevertheless they did a fair job ensuring the important parts of those three hours were all touched upon. It doesn't feel like anything was necessarily left out.

I actually don't mind the pacing as much, seeing as one of the few issues I had with the game was the opposite (took forever to get the story moving at the start) The animation is well done. The soundtrack uses tracks from the game, which is fine because those were good tracks anyway. I won't comment on the voices for the sub as I have yet to play the Japanese-voice version of the game, though I may have to after this. Overall it was enjoyable. Like Persona 4 the Animation, if you've played the game its the same story but with a few Easter Eggs here and there that draw upon the knowledge of the game, while if you've haven't played the game it serves as an excellent "Cliff Notes" version that gives you the overarching main story, while still leaving a lot to discover if you are interested in the game from watching the anime.

I loved it Can't wait for next week to come around.

Mmm I don't think it was rushed, you have to remember Persona 5 can last up to 150 hours, my game play clocked in at 144 hours and 45 minutes (Yeah I remember my time lol - it was only 2 weeks ago though) and if you remember how the game turned out we are still in very early moments, like you may recall they go to the castle first, then go back and then go back again for a 3rd time, all the drama has to go down at the school first.

Apparently we will have 24 episodes? That is still a good chunk of time

I see we shall be meeting Mona next week

We are getting 24? Good, for some reason I thought it was a 1 cour. That doesn't really make sense to me given the game's length - it took 25 episodes to cover Persona 4's story, and that was a bit shorter.

Well it would have to be 24, no way 12 could cover it
. Looked and no confirmed episode number, but given how little was covered in the first, would have to cut a lot to cram it into a single cour if they kept that pace.

Plus, seeing as they had Kawakami drop the maid leaflet, possible each of the tarots side stories will be fleshed out, maybe only a scene here and there but they add a lot to the motivations behind each of them.

Whoa! Looking cool, Joker!

The pacing is fast, but that's to be expected. At least we can expect all the important parts of the story to animated and it's confirmed to be 24 episodes.

I noticed 2 big changes to the first scene. Major spoilers:

Actually, it's the masks. You notice how the mask appeared attached to Ren's face just before his Awakening, and he literally had to rip off half the skin on his face when he pulled it off? That happens for all the Awakenings in P5. After the Awakening, their appearance in the Metaverse always has a mask, and removing that mask summons their Persona.

As is par for the course with the Persona franchise, it's all based off of themes from the Jungian approach to psychology. The symbolism is that we all mask our true selves going about our daily lives, and these masks serve as shackles, chaining our inner selves away. One whose soul is filled with rebellion can remove their mask and unleash their true self. In our world of course the idea is metaphorical in nature, but...

Not a fan of the flyer that Kawakami drops, not particularly believable when she absolutely should not reveal that she is doing that sort of job as a teacher, in front of the principle to top it off.

And I kinda hate the look of Sae Niijima, she was always a no nonsense type of character that wouldn't have time for make up and such, not to mention they aged her up with grey hair over brown.

Ann's interactions is pretty off too especially with whats to come.

There are more and more annoying nit pics every few minutes, feels like the show is going to be more frustrating to watch due to the random changes than something to enjoy having beaten persona 5 already.

Persona 5 is one of my favourite games of all time and so far I'm very pleased with how this adaptation is being handled. The anime feels like Persona 5 and that's no easy feat give how stylish and unique the games is to play. I think part of why it has translated so well to anime is because they used the game OST extensively, really does set the tone perfectly.

Sae did wear makeup though. She had like, the reddest lipstick in the game and her concept art does have the same eye shadow that is present in the anime.

Kawakami's dropping the flyer seems forced, but at the same time, it might be the only way they can show her social link as an easter egg since there's a good chance it gets removed. You bet Ren's gonna walk by Toranosuke doing a speech at some point, flip a channel through Hifumi's chess match, buy a weapon from Munehisa and pass by an arcade with Shinya shooting an arcade gun.

Eh, still wishing this show got more airtime. 24/25 episodes aren't enough to do the game justice. Just hope they don't throttle the pacing like they did in Grancest War, which killed that series for me.
