Cute High Earth Defense Club
HAPPY KISS!

In this new season we have an all new set of bathing boys, a happy prince whose true form resembles an otter, and, of course, faaabulous magical transformations. It's all coated with shiny sparkly silliness.

I had enjoyed the first season of Cute High. It was funny, frothy, and feel good in its stupidity and ridiculousness. I gave season two a try, and though it was largely more of the same it seemed flat and dull. I couldn't tell you exactly how it lost its sparkle, but for me it had and I dropped after episode 3.

This first episode has won me back. It's a new set of characters, and exactly the same premise, but I found myself smiling and smirking and rolling my eyes (in a good way) at the shiny, bright bamboozlement of pretty, pretty boys.

"Are you happy?
Yes!

Let's happy hour!

I like how this episode began by raising the question of if and how the first series is canon to this one, and then never gives us a clear answer.

So it looks like we're ditching love for happiness this season, as the Battle Lovers are replaced with the Happy Kissers and their surprisingly bishounen mascot. Speaking of which, I find it funny that the Happy Kissers are part of the Earth Defense Club (lol), and yet Prince Otter pretty much states that his goal is world domination. Happy world domination, mind you, but still. Feels like he should be the bad guy, lol.

We'll see how this goes. Season two got me worried the whole joke of the show might be getting kind of old, so we'll see if this season mixes it up enough. I did like the "Red is Leader" scene, though.

I also completely forgot LOVE!LOVE!LOVE! was a thing, or as I like to call it now, Battle of the Music Videos.

So, when this week's monster of the week showed up, I was puzzled. "That looks like the plastic thing you use to hold bread bags shut," I thought. "I wonder what it's supposed to be." (Because being a thing that holds bread bags shut didn't make any sense.)

And then...

I'm enjoying this season's silliness so far.

Oh man, I really liked that one part of the episode. You know, where that one guy did the thing, and then all that stuff happened. It was really, uh, what's the word... Ah, it's on the tip of my tongue...

Anyway, I find it kind of funny how so far, the Happy Kissers transformations have been relatively pointless. The only real reason is so they can use Happy And Turn to finish the monster off.

I also liked how the culture festival soft serve legend basically boils down to "two guys were chosen to run the soft serve stall, and they did." That was pretty good.

...Oh, wait, that's the word! Good!
