its out now but its censored for whatever reason. it doesn't make sense lmao

Well season 3 was censored when it was simulcasted on Funimation so I am not surprised. At least it's not the worst kind of censoring I've seen (remember Terraformar's "Let's hide 95% of the screen with black bars"?)

Cue the (in good humour) "spotted the fake fans" comments when people miss that the art resembles the light novel illustrations more so than the other seasons.

I get the "why is it censored" ideal, but come on. Is this everyone's first rodeo (did these people not watch the simulcast of Season 1-3?). On an unrelated note, it's nice to see games are starting to take steps towards patches and whatnot for light novels, etc. Maybe the anime industry (mainly Japanese right holders) will follow suit, but I imagine there's a lot of money to be had for giving exclusive rights to Japanese channels for uncensored episodes. Kind of like how we have HBO and other such 'premium' services in North America.
(I still think DxD and Testament have the best censoring offhand. The little D's and Chibi's always crack me up).

Getting back to the art - I like the changes. It will take some getting used to I imagine, but I like that Gasper looks more feminine to match his personality as an example. The Boosted Gear/Juggernaut Drive sequence was on point. Not even going to bother going back and watching that scene from Season 3 to compare... this one easily has it beat with less screen time too. It could just be me, but the characters seem more expressive and move more fluid than I remember past seasons (could just be the style fooling me).

Stupid Sexy Vali.

i think the art is great, even though i had first anticipated it not being so great because i really enjoyed the first 3 seasons art, but nonetheless passione did a good job. I'm thoroughly impressed with this. the censorship was good sure, but I just was used to it not being that way bc I started it a little late.
I'm still excited for this season, and the continuation of the story line.

I’ll say this again since people keep on asking and are clearly not reading other people’s post of why CR doesn’t have the uncensored version: CR, Funi and practically every streaming services obtains the censored because the broadcast in Japan is censored and that is typically what the publishers give and what they can only get. Yes there is an uncensored version that airs on AT-X but that is a premium only channel that apparently astronomically expensive to obtain the rights from.

I remembering watching these when they were censored so that didn't bother me one bit. But I will have to get used to the net art. the new art wasn't bad by any means; just different. Except for the delay in publishing; I am reasonably okay with the new version.

Was anyone else a little confused with the first episode, I mean i had to make sure i didn't click on the wrong episode after watching it. I mean there were some new bits added, but other than that it seemed to similar to episode 33. I thought they would continue directly off the last episode...

Like almost everything simulcast on either CR or Funi, High School DXD will be simulcast censored, the same as on broadcast TV in Japan. It will be broadcast uncensored on AT-X, a satellite channel, in Japan. Once it is released on Blu ray/DVD by Funi, it will be available uncensored on Funi's site. Whether it ever gets an uncensored version on CR, who knows? Testament of Sister New Devil is still censored on CR, while Funi, which is releasing the Blu Ray and DVD for CR, has uncensored, dubbed versions on its site.

Or stop paying for CR until they offer the studios enough money for the uncensored version.

Are you willing to pay at least $30.00 a month for CR? IIRC (and if I'm wrong, someone please update this), the monthly fee for AT-X is about $30 USD a month.

Understand this: CR and Funi get the TV broadcast, censored versions of shows in almost every case for their initial broadcast. AT-X has an exclusivity deal for the uncensored versions. That means:

THE JAPANESE NEVER OFFERED THE UNCENSORED VERSION TO CR OR FUNI FOR SIMULCAST!

This is not CR or Funi's fault. They can only get what the Japanese studios offer.

Well, the good news about this is that this means I'm going to have to marathon through the previous 3 seasons.

The artwork? It feels...off, and worse, cheap.

I understand that this might be more in line with some of the art from the novels, but the artwork in this season seems less detailed than in the first 3 seasons, especially the first 2 seasons. It doesn't seem to be as rich in detail or depth of color, and feels inferior. And that's not going into the change in character design. To me, the art just seems to lack a depth of detail that was present in the first 2 seasons, and even the 3rd.

Passione hit it right out the park by remaking the finale of DxD BorN. Great job. Animation looks great... OMG Cao Cao be looking so sexy lol. Great idea to restart with the finale. It gives fans the chance to really live the correct finale as well and getting us a first sample of the animation. Can't wait to buy the 4th Season LE release. Oppai Dragon 4 Life!

The art will take getting some used to since it seemed to detract alot of the seriousness of the fight scene but it enhanced the comedy bits by a good deal. I'll reserve my opinion until we are a few episodes in with new content to judge it with, but here is to hoping it will be a blast.

I was actually looking forward to the art style quite a bit when they announced the changes and was very happy with it.(I really liked the art style in rail wars lol so that made me look forward to the change) I’m glad we got an episode 0 as it’s been a minute since I finished season 3 so that was a much needed refresher for me. Looking forward to the rest.

I am not someone who reads the LNs of this series. I am someone that has watched this series in anime from since the beginning. Anyone who knows me well enough on here (of which there are very few anymore) know how much I like DxD. I could care less about the style matching the source as long as what I am watching is good.

That said I do not mind the new art style at all. I could go for either style just from a static image kind of standpoint. However the actual animation isn't as good as previous seasons. It simply isn't. It's not as defined or refined. It is much more "herky-jerky" by comparison to previous seasons. There are oddities in character movements during camera pans and zooms. There is mis-matching of lip-flaps which simply should not happen with the Japanese voices at all. And there are clear portions of the episode where you can tell between static and non-static animations, backgrounds, overlays, etc.

I am not saying it was horrible. It's still DxD and just a fun ecchi action harem, however it's off to a rocky start especially for those of us who really appreciated the previous seasons.

I think it will improve over time. And definitely be cleaned up for the blurays. I see potential here.

TL;DR - Art style is fine. Animation needs improving. But, still decent enough to watch as a fan.
