You know how Princess Mononoke is a story about finding a middle ground between nature and technology, without either side consuming the other?

During the Genesis era, Sonic the Hedgehog had the exact same message, except siding with nature over technology. Dr. Eggman is this industrialist building cities and factories on top of animal ecosystems and imprisoning animals in his robots. And as a result, you have anthropomorphic cartoon animals like Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends working together as a team of eco-warriors to stave off the technological invasion of Dr. Eggman and thus restore their own animal ecosystems to their former glory.

And much like Princess Mononoke, it's not hamfisted in Sonic, either, but for an entirely different reason from that movie. Sonic's main selling point at the time was his super speed, so it wasn't like its environmental message was going to take over most of the early 2D games meant for Sonic's super speed. Princess Mononoke, on the other hand, was different, because it was all about promoting an equilibrium between nature and technology, rather than advertise one thing only to come out with another like Sonic.

Princess Mononoke obviously pretty much lifted its entire script word for word from Sonic. I don't understand why there isn't more of an uproar about this.

This is a fairly common anime trope trying to find balance between nature and technology. Pokemon series has this theme everywhere to for example.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you live in a state that legalized marijuana.

Why does this remind me of Sonic 06 from game grumps.

I could swear they had this exact conversation. It's been some time but this sounds to familiar.

Outside of the fact this is another spoof forum topic, it's always nice to have a Miyazaki classic up for discussion. I'm not sure where the lepers and brothel girls fit into Sonic though, maybe I missed those levels.

All stupidity aside, Princess Mononoke is one of my all time favorite Gibli films.

This is a joke, right? I'm just talking about the comparisons between Sonic the Hedgehog and Princess Mononoke, and how both involve the equilibrium between nature and technology.

can confirm; am San.

really though I haven't seen enough Sonic to say. There are lots of other animes that explore the "mankind's relationship with nature", for sure, but it is a big thing of Miyazaki's. He also does it with Nausicaa and in his short music video, On Your Mark. (Probably to some extent in Ponyo, too, I can't really remember).

Editing because I just remembered: and also in Spirited Away! The part with the river spirit. He does tend to hit you over the head with it a bit, but he gets a pass.

Guess I gotta start watching Sonic to be able to make an intelligent comparision

Since when did The Sword in the Stone promote environmentalism?

Since Arthur was turned into a squirrel, a bird, and a fish to get their perspective versus court life.
