Japan went from a near medieval society all the way up to the industrial revolution very quickly. Obviously, Kenshin takes alot of liberties with it but a surprising amount of the characters are based on real people. If you have the DVDs, their is a bonus feature on each DVD which meticulously describes all the historic references in each volume. "The Last Samauri" also takes place during this period. I enjoyed the movie alot (mainly for the setting and "sprit" of the movie) despite some of the historical liberties it took as well. Not so sure I'd want to live then though... despite being the romantic I am, I'm too aware of how hard life was before the modern age. But this is the "Kenshin" version so everything will work out . |
