Ingnorant to be happy huh? It would make sense.. because u don't need to trouble urself with so many things... But i think dat it's a false happiness..

I understand the protagonist of the book dat u were reading.. to 4get everything.. to focus on what really important.. like ur life and the way u treat ppl.. but.. if all ppl are ignorant ppl.. then.. this world, the earth,, our home.. will be full of cowards hu cant face their problems..

However, for younger ppl.. It's kinda alright to be ignorant once in a while.. coz.. I think dat younger ppl have lesser worries than old ones; therefore, making their worries.. a child-like worries.. dat dont usually affect their future nor the world's future..

Ahh.. For me.. It would be best if u can understand.. bcoz.. to understand.. means dat ur doing ur best to live your life to the fullest.. But.. too much intelligence and being boastful is not good at all.. Use ur intelligence to benefit ppl..

uuu.. I just remembered 2 quotes hu totally disagree with my third paragraph:

"Little steps.. taking things little by little.. can lead.. to a big life success".. "Young ones help to build the world by inspiring the adult with their innocent actions, minds, hearts and eyes"

The answer is different for different people. I haven't entirely convinced myself yet, but I'd probably just prefer happiness over awareness since I wouldn't be aware of my unawareness. Unfortunately, drugs often lead to pain as well, and I know of no other way to go back to how I used to perceive the world. All I can say in my current state is that I have better knowledge of my options in life and freedom from many attachments, but I'm unsure even now if that's really any different from one who isn't aware. Is free will really worth the cost when everything might turn to dust?

EDIT: This is not to say, of course, that no one can be happy and aware. I just haven't managed it myself yet.

Just a very simple answer that applies to almost everyone: you are happier when you were a child as compared to when you have grown up. As a child, you know less and so think of the world as more simplistic and in a happier term :)

Another problem seem to be left out is that when people are smart, they are deemed as geeks (because smart people do study) by people of average standards. Often, they get ostracized and/or made fun of, life then isn't very happy.

Then don't reply. This is "extended discussion" thread. If you don't have anything to say, then don't spam.

On Topic:
"Ignorance is Bliss", is a common phrase that is said in society today. It is ironic that people say that after many years of technology advancement and never-ending strive for knowledge. It would be foolish to think that without knowledge, it will bring you happiness. Children are ignorance and happy because they don't understand things that are going on in the outside world, nor do they have to worry about it. We might be at unease sometimes but the explanation is that we can comprehend some things that others cannot.

For example, people in our society decides not to visit the doctor, in fear that they will find any cancer. This choice is considered false because it's the "I do not know, thus it cannot be" state of mind that causes people to feel this way. True, hypothetically, if the world is going to end in a day, then I'd rather die without fear. But if I somehow anticipated the outcome, then I would prepare for it and say a farewell to every member of my family and not just die in vain.

The statement can be both valid and invalid. Some things in this world would be better off not knowing, but that knowledge would also change your fate. It is truly a bliss for you to not know that your girlfriend is cheating on you? Is it a bliss for you to not know the affects of drugs? As we mature, it's inevitable that we gain experience and that converts into wisdom and knowledge.

If you asked people this question they would probably answer that of course they don't want to be blind and ignorant, but that may not be true. If it was, there wouldn't be so many drug addicts. Both illegal drugs(like cocaine, crack, heroin) and prescription drugs(like Prozac,Valium,Morphine) are used by people to escape reality or get rid of the depression that comes from living in this world.

I for one think that ignorance is bliss, I have a lot of repressed memories and things that I try not to think about. If I thought about I'd probably develop Anthropophobia. But I wouldn't take drugs because I use my brain and I wouldn't want it to be weakened.

that rather tough, i would rather prefer a medium if possible. Being too smart can be problematic but also being stupid can also be a bad think.
But on a side note, being extremely intelligent (sorry for the bad spelling if any) isn't automatically a bad thing.

Sorry that i can't post as complex/long theories as the rest of you

i believe it does...
well, that's the problem when you're smart...
you tend to analyze everything including happiness...
you think its overated, cheesy etc...
but at the end of the day happiness is better than intelligence...

I know what you mean. It seems like the more we know/the smarter we are the more complicated and depressing life seems. Knowing to much is a pain but I'd reather go through life knowing to much and being in pain then knowing nothing and living with internal shame.

Woah, seriously? Being smart makes you unhappy? But I can understand what you're trying to say. It's like when you know about like your favorite things are made out of something gross, you tend to stay away from it. Being smart makes you aware of things. It's not bad. I would want to be smart, but not too smart. Being stupid.... is well stupid.

This depends on the state of the world or your environment. If there is more bad news and information in your world, the chances of you feeling worse after getting more information is higher. However, having more knowledge can also make you happier depending on the information you receive to help you understand things more.

It's not our intelligence or knowledge that makes us unhappy. It's our emotional interpretation of information in regards to the world and life. In our society, the more information you have, there is a higher chance of being unhappy since you will probably have a lot of bad knowledge and also form unhappiness based on your emotions and interpretations of life.

Wow..this topic is damn interesting! I totally agree. Sometimes I wish I was stupid and not critical to society, so I could live a normal life, like everybody else. I have to read this book the topic starter talked about, it seems like the perfect book for me.

While I acknowledge my inner retard, I consider myself a person of notable intelligence, and I'm still (in the long run) very happy with myself. The big picture of contentment is really decided by you. But, intelligence will create discontentment in the details. Allegory and Algernon and all that. Like, I'm discontent with the state of education, and I'm disappointed with what makes up more than half of the contemporary literature for adolescent readers. These things tend to give the intelligent goals, though. As a result of my own discontents, for example, I want to be an artist and a writer, to help inspire the youth to want to learn more and gain more.

Well, if you're so smart that you know just about everything about anything, I imagine it wouldn't be that fun. I mean you know practically everything already, so, there's really no "mystery." But, I guess it depends on how you look at it. I like being somewhere in the middle - not too smart, but not too dumb. There's a downside/upside either way:

Too smart -
Upside: Hey!! You know everything!! :D
Downside: Hey..you know everything ._. now what's left to discover?
Though it is good because you're almost guaranteed a successful future..and yet, I still don't think I'd enjoy it. It's not like you can improve now.

Too dumb -
Upside:You're basically amazed by just about anything, so, that's gotta be kinda fun.
Downside: Now you can be easily duped, and you'll probably end up with nothing. =\

I hope something I said made sense. >_>

Everyone thinks because everyone is inquizative- this is human nature. By taking drugs and killing braincells, you are basically defying what you are supposed to be- a human. We are the smartest creature we know- therefore we are meant to think about things. We are meant to care. Once you choose not to care- you become an insult to your specise and you are most likely a weak minded person. We are all smart, and none of us reach anywhere near our potential intellectually so its almost a level playing ground- the only thing that differs is the amount of effort that you put in.
