^ cultural relativism is as low as you can get when it comes to morality. Just as Creationism does not help us understand anything (God did it....And?...that's pretty much it...wow what a great theory ugh! ) so does Cultural relativism. it does not contribute anything to Ethics. It's a decriptive view, that may work in anthropology but it does not work well in ethics.

"It depends what is accepted in your society, really." Really? well in Nazi Germany it was "their own way of life" as you said to blame, discriminate, and exterminate Jews. So what? is Evil really subjective? because if what you say holds true then we had no business on trying to stop the nazis from killing Jews.

It doesn't look really subjective now does it?

PS to all of you:
Not every single thing that is difficult to describe or define is overall subjective. Sometimes is right, but sometimes seems like an easy way out of addressing the question

One of the most evil things is willful ignorance

wasn't it shakespeare who said "nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so?"

Can we define what is and isn't evil?

I think everyone can agree that raping and murdering a child is evil, but most educated people hate calling anything "evil" due to the religous implications of the word.

Is killing someone evil? On the surface, it might appear so until you factor in extenuating circumstances. Is someone life being threatened? Did they commit a crime worthy of death penalty? Was it unintential?

I think the issue is that we can agree that somethings are unquestionably evil, and that some things are good, but there is an awful lot of undefined grey in between.

"stop the nazis from killing Jews." First things first, that never happened.

Just kidding.

But I take offense to this: "dont say things like "satan" etc. only things that exist."

Evil is just a manifestation of societies ineptitude to accept people that follow differnet trends than the 'accpeted ones' but evil things do exist but how do you exactly define evil I dont know

@Haddon See I told you it was a good idea to start a thread like this

Haddon is only saying the devil comments for the sake of this argument. You cant prove satan to be real soo how can you know that he is even evil just because a book with selective writings says so? Theres no evidence to support it byeond the bible or bible related material. So i believe sticking to things that we have concrete evidence on and have in fact been proven real is a much easier and better to way go about this.

I think is fascinating how all of us talk about evil or love, or the self, etc but when asked what are these things....we really don't know
