The point of reading those philosophers is to test your own philosophy against theirs

aye, and i have, but never so in-depth. personally, i think a lot of the philosophers, just like a lot of historical figures, are hyped up beyond what they should be. sure, julius caesar was an amazing strategist, but i betcha anything in a battle with the 8th legion against temuchins horde, khan would win, yet khan is known as some horrible barbarian, who did no good, and caesar is known as one of the fathers of the west.

aristotle and sophocles may have been amazing, but what about some of the completely unheard of people? their views are usually more interesting, i find.

Well then, going with what I typed before, your opinion would be considered seriously uninformed by what are widely considered the best thinkers now, not necessarily poor, but likely so as you would not know the most important traditions. Anyway my advice remains study some more, and check out the links I provided.

I've been meaning to get to Ayn Rand, but perhaps ill delay so more...
Mind giving an example of a more or less unknown thinker who was more intresting to you then some well known?

I've personally been into stuff by Dan Denett, and VS Ramachandran who whilst are not totally unknown, they aren't the first names that jump into one's head.

One thing I know is that there must be excellent Philosophers from the Middle East, Africa,
Latin America etc.
And we definitely need more female philosophers, I'm sure there is plenty but they get ignored.

The middle east is dominated by religion, so I doubt it. Africa is pretty run down is many places. Latin America is similar. Lots of leisure time is necessary for the academic pursuit of philosophy. So, I would say that its clear why there are not more excellent philosophers from those areas.

As far as women and philosophy, there have been few notable throughout the history of philosophy. Much of this surely has to do with their situation throughout history. Philosophy seems to continue to draw many more males though. I suppose males must be more rational eh .

I'd have to disagree with your claim that based on geographic lving conditions, that this somehow stunts the ability of a region to produce fine philosophers. Sure leisure time is necessary to dwell upon matters above the clouds, but this is not a proven fact. Einstein managed to work a regular job and wrote his paper on Brownian motion just fine.

Yes but the Middle East was once at the top of Academic thought, and Africa is a big place. And Latin America is much better than you think ( I'm quite offended actually)
Men is more rational? Wisdom and reason are not exactly synonyms.
We still need more women.

Latin America has several great Universities and educational institutions which have produced a great many intellectuals, one only needs to spend a little time for looking who these people is all.

Yea I was rather hasty and crude with those characterizations, so I expected some flak. The middle east was at the top what, a thousand years ago? I do apologize for my comments about Latin America and implore you to give me a proper perspective.

Ah I see what your getting at, wisdom as philosophy. A question of what wisdom and philosophy are eh.

I believe the word "need" should always be qualified.
