HOUSTON (Reuters) - The parents of students at a Houston middle school who tell teachers the dog ate their homework or the cat ripped it up are getting an unusual response: tell it to the judge.

At Houston's North Shore Middle School, the parents of students who habitually fail to complete their homework and miss a mandatory afterschool program are being summoned to court, school officials said on Thursday.

The school this week issued 48 misdemeanor criminal citations, similar in severity to a traffic ticket, to those students' parents. The tickets, which could have yielded a fine of up to $185, required parents to appear on Wednesday before Harris County Justice of the Peace Mike Parrott.

Parrott did not fine anyone, but used the session to set an example and explain the importance of finishing schoolwork, he said.

Hhmm, it's too much to invite to court, i do my homework usually just before the class, but i still do them cause it's easier than not doing, they are easy and no one would bother me. So if people don't do homework it's thjeir own problem, they won't get good grades or good job cause if theyare now with lazy attitude it won't change, and why would goverment need to spend money and work hours to that? it's just stupid, but i think more people will do their homework in there

Umm....why? What possible reason could they have for that? I'm lucky my school doesn't do that, or I'd probably be in jail right now (four year sentence, haha, I'm hilarious I know). As it is I've been threatened to get pulled into court for being absent as often as I am.

Either way this really is just stupid. Schools are annoyingly strict and they ignore most of the important issues that they should be looking into. In some cases there could be a reason the child isn't doing homework. I mean I'm sure not too many will argue with me when I say that they're probably just lazy, but there have been cases where some sort of emotion/mental problem could be holding them back. On the other hand I'd rather see something done about bullying. I don't care what anyone says, it's still a major problem in schools. Just look at the school shootings that have been happening recently. Maybe those kids were mental, but I doubt their own sanity would make them do something like mass genocide or whatever.

Well I've heard worse in the long run...(people being arrested for poppy seeds, etc.)

that's hilarious and hopefully it will actually help those kids to do their homework >_> It would suck but im sure in the future they wouldnt regret it-although in the future i dont really give a damn about much of anything that happened to me in the past which may have been a real shock to me back then. Unless, that is, if it still effects a part of my life to this day.

This is pretty stupid, I don't understand why the parents would need to be pulled into court. I mean, I understand that parents are supposed to be helping the students, and making sure that they are getting all their work done, but there is only so much a parent can do. I think that more responsibility needs to be put on the child, taking their parents to court aren't going to help them, most obviously the parents can't really control their children, so how is going to court gonna help in the long run, its just taking the parents away from the children more only increasing the issue. I mean we have some of the same things at my school, especially when it comes to absences, if you have too many unexcused absences they assume the parent isn't raising you correctly and have the parents go to court, and maybe even jail for a bit. It's pretty ridiculous, if the child doesn't want to go, or learn, then it's only going to hurt them in the future so they need to figure out what they want out of life, not what their parents want out of life.

Seriously, nowadays you can get everyone for everything to the courtyard. Why? Because almost everything can be interpreted as offending. Also this is only possible in the USA. In Europe the teacher would get mocked at, cuz it's just plain ridiculous.
I would say that the teachers totally fail at doing their job if they need to get the courtyard involved in such a laughable matter. It looks like they don't have any authority anymore, because they lack the dominance. Also they are not enough convincing to persuade the students to do their homework as it seems. However this could also be a system to have a better control over homicide issues. Such as kids being neglected. Or any other problems that could cause the kid's negligence towards their homework and schoolwork.

But summoning the parents to the courtyard, that's just exaggerated and ridiculous. I would have expected more intelligence and agility of the so-called pedagogues to solve problems of this kind. But I suppose that the most of them are not qualified enough to manage situations like this on their own. Genuine failures. Lawl~
