POP IS DEAD~This my thread and anyone elses thread to talk about how much they loath pop culter. I feel it really rots kids minds and it's just so conformist. Why am I tortured so every time I ride with someone in the car? And kudos to anyone who knows where I got the title to this thread from

"Pop Is Dead" is the second single released by Radiohead. It is the only Radiohead single not available on one of their albums.

Released only several months after their debut single "Creep" and their debut album Pablo Honey (on which "Pop Is Dead" was not included), the song also hit before "Creep" had begun its slow and surprising ascent up the pop charts worldwide. "Pop Is Dead" reached number 42 on the UK Singles Chart in May 1993. Radiohead, especially Thom Yorke, now hates the song and says the scathing reviews it got were deserved.

Good news waffle... after high school, the vast majority of your exposure to pop culture is voluntary.

It sucks, it's always sucked, and it always will suck. It appeals to the lowest common denominator. It's been dumbed down for mass consumption. Once in a while something good slips through, but that is a rarity.

In the end all entertainment, be it underground or mainstream, pop culture or sub culture, is all pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things.

I'd prefer pop culture to rap culture any day. Both are annoying, but kids that like pop don't dress up like clowns, talk like imbeciles and act violently to affirm self worth.

I used to be a huge hip-hop fan until 2003, I still like the classics and some stuff that's still produced, however I'm through with it. Good rap is too hard to find. The 'culture' seems only referred to by its commercialization - the clothes, the throwaway music, the alcohol.

The only modern benefits of rap is the way girls dance nowadays, no guy can deny they don't like the ass shaking, but this is so inconsequential to the impact it has on the kids.

My verdict is fuck rap, bring the 80's back. I'd prefer to deal with people of that era as opposed to the ridiculous punks of today, who all claim to be from the 'ghetto', I live around shitheads like these and I'm frankly tired of them.

dang, I liked my title. Anyways I was just wondering how can people like this stuff. It's raw stupidity. Stuff like brittney spears or 50cent. That shit is gay.

I don't know... there was alot of really gay stuff back in the 80s too...

I think the problem is hip hop has taken over rock n' roll, just like rock n' roll took over jazz. It's a vicious cycle. It may take 50 years for hip hop to disappear, but it's not going anywhere. Of course there is no gurantee whatever the next "big thing" is will be any better.

I'm against it because this fucking shit music produced nowadays because it promotes young kids to turn into assholes, plain and simple.

They rove in groups, beat up anyone they don't like, talk shit to older people, they've robbed me and broken my walkmen, thrown eggs at people's houses, talk that shittalk.

Kids who would have normally been decent turn into idiots, they think they have it bad or something living in North America. I was born in fucking Guyana, where kids actually starve and die, and people get chopped to death with machetes over a bag of mangos.

What the fuck do these kids have that's itching their ass so badly? Poor language and violent tendencies, a negative cultural outlook, commercialism is all that is promoted in 'rap culture'.

There is a need for a new paradigm shift back to a pop culture that was more funloving and yes - even 'bubbly', which is why I said I'd prefer 80's pop idealism over 06' rap imbeciles.

I would agree with this.

I think thats one of the reasons I made the shift to J-pop. I just wanted to listen to something that was honest to god FUN. I get that with J-pop.

I think one of the things that piss me off so much about hip hop is all the wasted potential for the art form. Freestyling takes a tremondous amount of talent. I remember back in basic trainimg seeing the black kids huddle up, make amazing beats by slamming lockers and knocking on bedframes, and then freestyling about all the shit we were going through. I've heard some of the rap coming from soldiers in the middle east - really interesting stuff. Then I turn on the radio and hear absolute crap. WTF? Then the white kids emulate all this hip hop image, and not only lose their cultural heritage (which call me crazy, I feel is somewhat important), but chose to embrace one of the most ignorant simplistic lifestyles possible! Ignorance is glorifed. It's like goddamned 1984 (the book), or better yet Alice in Wonderland. Everything is backwards. What really makes me upset is what things will be like in 20 years.

In case you haven't noticed, Anime and Manga is a pretty big part of pop-culture at the moment...

Yep I agree, but it's slowly starting to move to the background. In a few years it'll be just like the other geek subculutres I'd imagine. A dedicated following lacking any significant media attention. Which sounds great to me, but I hope the selection remains as diverse and plentiful as it is now.
