If you have never heard of it, here are some links to get you started:

Wikipedia entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.G.E.N.

Mugen Infantry (has everything you need to get started)
http://www.mugen-infantry.net/index.php

If you need more info, go to youtube and search for "MUGEN" where you will find tons of videos.

Its completely customizable, free, and addictive. Ever wanted to pit Goku vs Ichigo? Naruto vs Sephiroth? Street Fighter II Ryu vs Street Fighter III Ryu? It can be done with MUGEN. There are thousands of characters to choose from and many more are created all the time.

Just wanted to throw that out there, I'm bored

No idea what you are talking about :P

If you mean how the fights work (i.e. Luffy vs Sasuke or something), the individual characters are usually made by completely people, which means there isn't really any kind of standardization, which leads to completely broken gameplay if you aren't careful. Strangely, most of the completely cheap and broken characters are the most fun to use... Its all a matter of taste though

You have to download most characters and other stuff separately.

You can download the windows version here:
http://unofficial-winmugen.jpn.org/

However, besides one character, it'll be pretty much empty. So, you'll have to download the characters yourselves.

At first, adding characters is tedious and confusing, but it becomes second nature after awhile.

Use this database to download characters:

It's a real pain to set up, but some of my friends swear by it. I couldn't really get into it (although, until recently I really just didn't like fighting games). I admit, there is some really cool stuff for it, if you're willing to spend the time and effort.

Mugen is an awesome idea. It's Just the characters are totally unbalanced.
Eg. The Nightmare SSJ3 or Sephiroth. Both of which can kill in around three moves.
Seeing Homer kill Isabella is the best thing I've seen from mugen. That was cool.
Also the only place that DBZ is acceptable IMO.

Yeah, thats the biggest issue, but I avoid it by setting it so all of the really cheap characters are boss or sub boss characters in arcade mode.

Well, I found this tool that can help out organizing your MUGEN:
Mugen Windows Configurator
http://bytezero.mgbr.net/

It adds characters at the click of a button. Just make sure that you check what stage is set for each character because one mistake can screw everything up. Also:
MUGEN video tutorials

That should help out a bit. Now get cracking!

I have mugen with nightmare SSJ3 and SEPHIROTH(also an unstoppable character) I have other characters and about 35 stages aswell as about 50 characters....

ALL CREDIT GOES TO THE CREATORS OF THESE MARVELOUSE CHARACTERS AND STAGES!

Also if you have MSN or LYCOS I will Email you a character I also have VERY HARD TO BEAT(ALMOST GODS) EVIL RYU AND EVIL KEN.

Well, the "creator" of Nightmare SSJ3, stole most of the coding from the original creator. I try not to use stolen works

50 characters? I think I have at least 200 :P

Plus, the original Broli owns Evil Ken and Ryu easily
