The anime series, directed by Takayuki Hamana, animated by Trans Arts and co-produced by Nihon Ad Systems and TV Tokyo, aired across Japan on the anime satellite television network Animax and the terrestrial TV Tokyo network from October 10, 2001 to March 30, 2005, spanning a total of 178 episodes. In April of 2006, an OVA continuation of the anime began to be released on DVD. The beginning of the second OVA series was released on June 22, 2007, roughly 3 months after the end of the first. The second OVA ended on January 25, 2008, and the third and final OVA is scheduled to start on March 16, 2008, as stated in the series' official site.

Its just the continuation of the National Championship OVA's...just been split into 3 series. I suppose its to give the manga story time to develop so the series sticks with it...we've all watched anime that are adapted from manga that go off on a tangent because th manga isn't finished.

If they followed him to his 3rd year that would be one long anime and manga since he's in his 1st year. The manga isn't behind at all...its on the final game of the Finals Match (Ryoma v Yukimura)
