Depends on how you use it. If you use it in a racist and hateful way, then shame on you.

I've never used the word 'Jap' because seeing as though I don't know whether it's offensive or not its just best to not say it at all. And besides, it sounds a bit disrespectful and... well stupid so I'd just say Japanese.

Jap was used by Americans and British during WW2 Nips was the same way.

Its like if Americans would be called the Meriks or Yanks. Or if British were called Cocks or Bitish.
If America lost a war, the word Meriks would be annoying.

I think it still would be considered an offensive term. Its abreviation but it was used offensively during the WW2 era, I don't think it should be used.

Actually both may be used depending on the context

Erm...not really...It's just short for 'Japanese' obviously. It would be silly to be offended by what country you come from. But yeah...it depends how you use it really.

yeah.... but i was thinking of Nihon considering that she used Nipon with one "P" when it is supposed to be Nippon.... so it didnt come to my mind in anyway...... but originally it was Nihon.. but since it was pronounced Nippon... it then became that...

I dont think it truly is but the way and tone that some people say it in make it sound like a racist word. I would say that it is more rude than racist that someone cant say your japanese and have to say your "jap" instead.

its not as offensive as gook or chink, its like how americans are called yanks or how australians are referred to as "austies"..... but anyway you should just say japanese or because this is internet age and you want to make things short you can just say "ive got allot of J-friends" thats what i think
