Is 'Jap' Really an Offensive/Bad Word?
Posted 6/24/08
i dnt think it's to offend them but people just like to shorten things, like how people like to shorten people's name

I don't use the term Jap because its historically a slur and no it is not short for japanese. People who still use the term jap to describe japanese things sound like old fashioned dumbasses. The official three-letter and two-letter international country codes (ISO 3166) for Japan are JPN and JP, while the international language codes (ISO 639) for Japanese are jpn and ja (not jp).

I'm not really sure but I heard it was offensive to Japanese because American soldiers referred to them as "Japs" during WWII. I'm not Japanese but I can understand so I usually type out the entire word even though I get lazy sometimes... >.>;

Depends entirely on intention of speaker, as every other similar word. If there is mutual agreement between the people that the word is not offensive, then it is not. Just as Russkie, etc.

I don't think it is. To me, it's just a abbreviated version of "Japanese".

I play a videogame with both NA and Japanese players and sometimes the Japanese will get offended if you refer to them as "japs". They prefer to be called "JP" or "Jpn".

Actually, Jap also stands for Jewish-American Princess, which was used as a derogatory term to describe Jewish women of a wealthy and pampered background.

If its something some old war veteran would say

yes.

I think it depends on the context of the word being used :)

But it is more respectful to just say Japanese...
