Shimoko: Well, I think that at least some anime shows are a deceint way to introduce elements from Japanese culture and specific other types of information, although it's likely to have been exaggerated for the purpose of looking/sounding cool. Then again, some say that within every story or myth is a kernal of truth.

Ningen: Oh really!? The only effect I've seen of you watching anime or reading manga is you slowly becoming a Hikikomori and rejecting civilized society for a bunch of made-up drivel!

Shimoko: Yeah really! And did you know that American, so-called, 'reality' TV shows are a bunch of made-up drivel?!

Ningen: No way!! You're worse than I thought! You need to go off of anime and manga cold turkey, for the sake of becoming a normal human being!

Akurei: ....

Ningen: Monster! Are you going to say something insulting as you usually do!?

Akurei: ...You're mother!

Shimoko: Can't argue against that.

Pros: Anime is entertainment.

Cons: Anime storylines are almost always illogical. Anime philosophies are almost always illogical. Anime very rarely have facts straight.

To me, anime is an art, a piece of creativity like a book or a movie or a painting or whatever. I think with the constant exposure to a wide diversity of creativity such as anime, a kid/person can really start to develop their own ability to imagine, as well as develop a liking (my brain can't seem to find the right word) to art.
One example that made me "like" (I will find this word one day) art more is Kanon 2006 (Yes). It amazed me how the art with the background and the massive eyes and all that other stuff could invoke emotions into the audience, even with a kinda illogical story-line. I reckon KyoAni just made a brutally mediocre anime series into a much better piece of art, one that can be valued.
I digress...

Anime can also broaden the world for the child who watches it, maybe more so for the Western culture kids who watch it. A lot of anime is based on something, whether it be school-life, Japanese history, society, etc. Although this could be just a warped version of reality, which basically feeds the audience lies, it at least tells them that it may exist, and it will be there in Wikipedia, if they were to care or if they were so interested in it. Some even introduce morals and stuff (even super-crazy-awesomely-strong monsters should value morals!), which could potentially benefit the kids.

I've just killed 20 minutes.

You can actually learn something from it
gives you hope (in some way....)

anime is an art form, a medium im told over and over. Fine and dandy, and considering that, its got to be made by artists (with me so far?) and artists are, well, not scholars. Going on this little train of reasoning I'm inclined to assume that anime, even when engineered to inform, is not gonna be a good source to to do so. Still, that doesnt mean anime cant be beneficial in the way that any art is, broadening horizens, making you think in different ways (at least if its anything like original) and so on and so forth....

it really depends on who's watching...

a mature audience who can discern reality from fantasy would not get affected by what they are watching... relaxation is one of the pros. for me, it lowers my stress level.

but an audience who believes that santa still exists may be at risk of the dangerous effects or the "cons" of anime. there's a forum about a child who died because he was trying to reenact a scene from one of the anime he watched -- this is one of the cons.
