just tell your parents it's something to kill time. and would you rather me watching anime or doing drugs? This might work for you

Ask them to watch an episode of a particularly good anime with you, and for them to keep an open mind. Maybe just ask your mum, because your parents might be more inclined to approach it with an open mind separately. They will probably find it enjoyable and change their mind, even if they won't admit it at first.

Tell them you know of a 49 year old woman who likes anime (me), that might help. If any of your friends' parents like anime, tell your parents this.

Point out the huge difference between anime and "cartoons", which they may think you are watching.

Perhaps tell them that some animes are reworks of classic stories eg Gangkutso is The Count of Monte Christo, and Rose of Versailles is about the French Revolution.

Initially avoid sharing anything with too much violence with them eg, avoid Gantz and Berserk till they, too, are addicted. This is what I predict will happen if you can get them to watch enough anime.

seconded. you could be doing a hell of a lot worse than watching anime. a lot of people go out and get drunk and take drugs to try and show their maturity. do they want you to do that in stead?

Some parents might see this as a threat or a further sign of immaturity.

Just tell your parent this:

Anime is my ANTI-DRUG, so pay the damn internet bill if you love me.

Yes it's fine being an anime addict but after you're done watching anime's don't go out and start acting as though your life is like one believe me it's not going to work but you can start acting like it is, while your in an anime convention oh and uh being Hyper ultra addicted is not exactly cool so stop watching for about like 4 hours see how it is then then if it doesn't work 8 hours then if that doesn't work then 24 hours...etc

Anime, in general, was made to be targeted towards kids in the 1960s (eg.: Astro boy, Cyborg 009, etc.), yet as time passed, it started to target teens, adults, and even males and females. It's not surprising to find parents who think that anything animated and hand-drawn would be childish (esp. in America), but it goes without saying that the statement, "anime is childish," is totally superficial.
They might have said that because they think you watch anime too much, but that's just a possibility. Regardless of the possibilities, try showing your parents a violent ANIME and a violent CARTOON back-to-back. Afterwards, just dare them to call anime OR cartoons "childish." It really works. My mom saw my brother and I watching the R. Kelly episode from the Boondocks and she hasn't said a word about anime since.

Liking anime or even cartoons, for that matter, is nothing to be ashamed of. It's nothing childish.

The "addiction" is another story. I'm not saying that being addicted to anime is childish, but it's certainly something that you have to consider. You're 17, so I'm assuming you'll be entering college soon, and you'll soon realize that you'll need to prioritize studies, or even your future (i.e. job, occupation, etc.) above your "addiction" for anime.
