Enhancment of Hate Crimes will only result in the increase in severity of future crimes of that matter. This is because of the structure of the human mind, where increase in punishment triggers more effective degrees of rebellion.

yes.. a big yes to that...
in my country... the phil. it really is very mych needed...
we're always bothered by the fact that we're a christian country that religion always gets in the way of the government...
it says that it is not morally right and the like but its not it...
people do the same things over and over again...
we have a lot of laws and most of these laws are pretty good..
but the punishment is not too much... mostly bailable...
people are always sooo forgiving...
i dont like the fact that justice is sooooo very very slow in the phils...
i hate that

I just can't see how it can be considered to be better for someone to do, say a murder, cold-bloodedly for profit, then out of hate. Doesn't the number one scenario imply less regard for human life?

Despite the fact that 56% of people (21 out of 37) at the time of this post seem to think punishment should be enhanced for hate crimes, I see absolutely no legitimate arguments - or any argument at all - for the stance. I can't even imagine defending it. I'm waiting to see if someone will present a case...

It should be clear, then, that I do not think we should. Intention and reasoning behind murder may matter in some cases, but to say that killing because of skin color is worse than killing because of losing a job (or, for a more rhetorically effective structure, that killing because of losing a job is better than killing because of skin color) is absurd. It would place particular importance on the very aspect of the individual that was hated, which is exactly what we do not need: the perpetuation of pointless hatred. Besides, you can imagine how many cases would begin to come up where someone is tried for a hate crime rather than a normal crime simply because the individuals involved were of a different race. How do we go about proving it?

How are you going to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the crime was done based on someone's race or sexual orientation? Most of the time it is used for a motive for the crime and for it to have a stricter punishment, there would need to be adequate proofs that the person didn't attack the person just because he doesn't like him.

The Senbon is here have no fear

Ok with the lack of specification on this topic I assume your talking about general hate crimes. When most people think of such things the include African Americans. Honestly you cant change somebodies ideals or how they act. In fact using a more dreading style of restriction will compel people to do it more (reverse psychology). You`d have to claw your way to the source of the hatred and make the people question WHAT FOR?..... Why hate somebody based on appearance..economical status or intelligence (which hell everyone does)..... Thats the only way to actually solve the problem.

Its the equivalent of smacking a child for putting their hand in the cookie jar. They will most likely do it again so what are you gonna do? Hadouken them?.... so they can do it again to spite you.

Wouldnt punishing cause more hate? I never changed my mind about some certain believe because I was punished...more about awareness imo.

I think so because a lot of times mobs are related to hate crimes and those instances are more severe than other crimes of the same type (murder, robbery, etc)

Hell yes. If the Holocaust repeats itself than I, along with my whole family, are going to die. The Holocaust was a mass genocide rooted by nothing more than simple hatred.

Hate is the worst reason to hurt someone for. Revenge is somewhat justified, and self defense is very justified. There is no way to justify hate. Hate is always wrong.

Punishment does not solve the problem of racism. It's merely a bandage. How would have a more severe punishment for "hate crimes" prevented the Holocaust from happening? A proper education would do wonders more than what can be achieved through fear. The only thing that fear would do would repress the feelings until they explode and cause even greater damage.
