Has anyone here seen or heard of this anime? Urusei Yatsura was Rumiko Takahashi's first major hit. For those of you who don't know, Rumiko Takahashi is the creator of Inuyasha, Maison Ikkoku, and Ranma 1/2. It's rather obscure in the U.S. because most American viewers probably wouldn't get the jokes related to Japanese culture. The anime version spanned 6 films, 11 OVAs, and 195 half hour TV episodes (comprising 218 separate stories, as the first season's episodes consisted of two fifteen-minute segments).

The Plot: (taken from AnimEigo's official website)

When the Oni, a mysterious race of Aliens, come to repossess the Earth, they give us one chance to save our planet; a champion, selected at random, must defeat their princess, Lum, in their national sport - TAG! Unfortunately for Earth, the champion turns out to be Ataru Moroboshi, a lecherous lad whose lack of luck is legendary.

When Ataru lays eyes on the curvaceous Lum, he readily agrees to take on the task of touching the tips of her tiny horns. Alas, when the contest begins, he finds out that the Oni forgot to mention one small matter - Lum can fly! When all seems lost, his girlfriend Shinobu promises to marry him if he wins. Inspired to new lows of deviousness by the prospect of getting just to first base, Ataru pulls it off.

Unfortunately, Lum misinterprets his victory cry as a proposal of marriage to HER, and promptly agrees.

So Ataru ends up with Lum living in his closet, planning their wedding, and zapping him with high-voltage shocks if he even looks at another woman; Shinobu isn't sure if she's been jilted or she's been saved from a life of misery; his Lum-crazed schoolmates are plotting to get him "out of the way"; and his parents are loudly wishing he's never been born.

I remember searching for it once upon a time, but I couldn't find it. The plots sounds amusing, however I've seen too much of Rumiko Takahashi's work to enjoy her characters and plot anymore, they resemble eachother quite a lot ;-(

I've seen about 20 episodes, and couldn't find anymore. It was pretty funny.....If only the episodes were as easy to find as the Ranma 1/2 episodes.....

i remember watching one movie long time ago, it was like they kept repeating the same week over and over

it was interesting but i just wanted it to end, it just got too weird (by weird i mean really fucking weird not boring, like the planet or w/e they lived in was this giant floating fish or something in space and whenever someone died a big statue would show up on the planet, i cant remember exactly)

I do like ranma and inuyasha, but the episodes just drag on way too much

You're referring to Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer, my favorite animated film of all time. Mamoru Oshii, director of Ghost in the Shell got his start working as the series director of Urusei Yatsura. After he left, Kazuo Yamazaki took over.

Lum Invader definitely stands out as the most sympathetic character in the series (with Shinobu and Kitsune being the only other sympathetic characters). She is without a doubt my favorite anime character of all time.

I just finished downloading this series a week or so ago. If the license ever expires on it I can upload it here on CR.

It's a really fun series, I'm enjoying it quite a bit though I'm not too far into it. I'm trying to finish Ranma 1/2 before I really get into it... and well, it's kinda hard to work up the motivation to finish it since the last part of the series is pretty mediocre (overall).

GenerlOlde.... you have great taste in anime, but a mac user?? Say it ain't so!

Lum-chan!!!!! Don't know if it is fact - but one of the 1st instances of the "alien princess-goes-to Earth-and-gets-engaged-to-Earth boy"/harem anime that I can remember. She makes Lala from TLR look like the derivative she is. One of my favorite series - ever.
