It is about as emotional as any other shounen. Maybe it's because the characters are fleshed out better than other shows(e.g. Naruto) and that makes people more emotionally attached to the character. It makes you want to care about them without having to use flashback episodes to remind you of their story.

Not sure about emotional but Hiro Mashima certainly isn't shy about showing the relationships and connections the characters have with each other or Erza and Jellal. With the whole Tower of Heavens thing that happened to them as kids.
He even ships for the fans Bisca and Al (married), Elfman and Evergreen, Levy and Gageel, Leo and Aeries and Cobra and Kinna. Heck this is one of the most coupling Shonen I have ever seen

It does a better job of showing the fullness of those emotions. It also tends to make you feel a part of the story, as the perspective starts off as an outsider looking in, then brings you into the center.

Some people who replied earlier before the anime came out mentioned that they would probably not watch the anime. I've personally read the manga as well as watched the anime, and I have to say the anime's wonderful. I absolutely love it, and this entire series just warms my heart.

I know I'm hooked now. Watched all the episodes from 1 to the most recent 167. Not sure why I'm not seeing a "coming soon" blurb for episode 168 but the storyline keeps you hooked especially with the foreshadowing in the last 10 episodes.
