Korea is a really awesome place to visit, and if you plan your trip right you can make it there during the off season relatively cheap. My trip was this past March and I flew, round trip, for $743. Keep in mind though that Korea does have four distinct seasons, make sure you research when you are going and pack accordingly! Korea can be hard to navigate as well if you don't have a guide. I lucked out as it was, my boyfriend is a native of Korea so I left him in charge of navigation while I kept my camera glued to my face.

The majority of my trip was spent in Seoul, with a small stop over at Jeju Island. If you are going to stay in Seoul it is really easy to get around with Seoul's great, great, great public transportation system of subways, buses, and taxis. If you plan to mostly go the trip on your own than T Money is a must! You can use them on subways, buses, some taxis, and even in some stores. It's easy, and most importantly cheap, costly usually no more than a $1.00 (about 1,000 won) to get from one end of Seoul to the other. Make sure to ask at your hotel where to buy T Money cards and also have them tell you where to get off or draw you a map. Some of the subways do announce their stops in English, but that does you no good if you don't know where you are going or don't have any idea where a location is in reference to where you are!

As for where to go....well that depends. I'm a photographer by trade and I love art and art history so I was all over the historical palaces, Buddhist temples and other such venues, however, a lot of these are going to look exactly the same. If you don't have any interest in these then pick one palace, and one temple, and you should be good to go on your Korean historical emersion. Luckily, there are a lot of palaces located in Seoul all with in walking distance of each other.

There is a foreigner distract in Seoul called Itaewon (I think I spelled that wrong...), but it's kind of depressing comparatively to the rest of the city. However, if you are on your way to North Seoul Tower and you want to take a look it might not be such a waste to stop by since it's on your way. North Seoul Tower is pretty interesting, more of a lover's hang out, but you do get a great view from the top of the spire. If you are so inclined you can even eat up there at one of the dinning facilities, but it was by far the worst meal I had during my trip.

I'm not much of a party person, so I didn't spend much time in clubs, but from what I saw there were pretty much like clubs in LA, expensive and way over hyped. Expect to throw down some money to get what you want to drink, foreign liquors will, of course, be more expensive, but that was the case at ANY bar let alone clubs.

The food was amazing!! That is probably the thing I miss the most. The service was always wonderful, quick, and polite. Also, it is not customary to tip, anywhere...not at restaurants, not in taxis, not at massage parlors. Make sure you try the local flare for food and drink. Food is always a big part of any culture and then always appreciate when you try something new, even if you don't like it! Like the saying goes, "when in Rome!" Don't be an ass either, no one likes rude people. Try to learn a few common phrases, "hello," "good bye," and "thank you," are always appreciated even when not said properly!

I have lots of pictures, more stories, tips, and accounts from my trip. If you're going to Korea and want some more info post me!

I'm going to Korea in 2 weeks with my boyfriend.
I would like to explore and everything, but my boyfriend's mom died and we're having her funeral there.
I would be too upset to look at Korea since I've known her for a long time.

i've been to korea, and i loved it. after hong kong, i would probably say seoul is the greatest place on earth (i haven't been to tokyo yet though). i went to everland too, and it's pretty cool. it's like disney world for teenagers. there's more roller coasters including the beastest wooden roller coaster in asia. in seoul there's this huge shopping area called meyong-dong. it's pretty much the same thing as ximenting in taipei or nanjing road in shanghai except with lots of kpop merchandise! korea is really clean, and there seem to be less smokers on the streets when compared to china or taiwan. the only thing i didn't like about korea was the food... korean bbq is good, but everything else is ehhh not that great haha. please don't kill me >_<
