(It's "Gone" not gon I know...Is there a way I can edit the topic title?, lol. Please PM me if you know)

In all three countries, students start formal schooling at age seven after participating in extensive early-childhood and preschool programs focused on self-reflection and social behavior, rather than academic content. By focusing on self-reflection, students learn to become responsible for their own education, delegates said.

Barbara Stein, manager of external partnerships and advocacy for the National Education Association, said Scandinavian countries “encourage philosophical thought at a very young age. … Grading doesn’t happen until the high-school level, because they believe grading takes the fun out of learning. They want to inspire continuous learning.”

In fact, educators and policy makers in all three countries view accountability and assessment far differently than in the United States, delegates said. In contrast to the focus on quantitative measures and standardized testing found in No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Scandinavian officials rely on a system that produces highly competent teachers who use their professional expertise to work with each student and develop individualized learning plans.

I remember how miserable I was in school, and the idea that other methods of schooling out their that actually work better than what I have seen hardly seemed possible. I mean, imagine not being graded until you are in high school....think of how much less stress a child would go through with that sort of schooling. Also, they tend to evaluate children against their own performance vrs against other children's-probably a much more successful method than the cold numbers they give in most countries.

^_^ Sounds good - I finished school in 2007 (in Australia).

Also - I read recently that education over there is actually free too, well at least in Denmark. I think that's pretty awesome. And here I am, going to have to pay about $1,500 per subject I'm doing per year eventually (and that's 8 subjects).

But the whole not evaluating performance against the other students sounds like a good thing.

gosh awesome place to go to school!!!!!!

i'm currently still studying and lets just say its so stressful here. just finished my exams and i had what 11 papers to take. plus exams are 4 times every year. (not including the tests). and if you don't do well, well you are lagging behind and that sucks.

well everyone is so grade-oriented. its kind of sad.

Lucky kids...they don't have much pressure put on them.
And no grades?! Come on, America, get with the program!
