Japanese sylables are not emphasised and are always consistent with vowel sounds.

A as in tot; I as in free; U as in chew; E as in way; O as in know

chigaimas - wrong
yume - dream
ai - love
suki - like
batsu - punishment
niku - meat
pantsu - underwear / pants
ti shatsu - T-shirt
denwa - telephone
anekki / onii(chan/san/sama) - brother
aneawe / onee(chan/san/sama) - sister
ocha - green tea
tenki - weather
genki - energy/mood

I'm currently moving through the kanji with James W. Heisig's Remembering the Kanji Vol. 1 (ISBN: 4889960759.) So far I've got 250 out of 2042 common use kanji memorized.

And for all you Mac OSX users, take a look at ProVoc http://www.arizona-software.ch/applications/provoc/en/description.php They've got lesson plans laid out for many languages, including a few for Japanese (genki 1 rocks!) and it's free.

Give it a shot.

Do you use the Rosetta Stone Program? Cause I have it and that's like the first lesson in a nutshell...

Aoi = Blue
Midori = Green (But Midori can be used for blue as well)
Akai = Red
Kuroi = Black
Kiiroi = Yellow
Shiroi = White

Negai = Long
Jitensha = Bicycle(?)
Konbanwa = Good Evening

Daijobu(sp?) (Ka, Desu Ka)= Are you Ok?
