I think wa is actually just a particle. Desu is the verb part of 'watashi wa steffi desu' that forms the 'are'/'is' bit.

yo no matter how many times i watch an anime with english sub i will never learn or memorize what the japanse words they are saying japanese language is more complicated to learn
