Oh my gosh, everyone's spelling is killing me! What people keep saying is 'soca' is actually 'sou ka' (or sou desu ka (soudesuka)). I could go on and on but it takes a while to type on my ps3 XP

People please use Kana and Kanji or at least Kana ! Romaji is horrible and an awful way to learn !
What is even more horrible is that you are writing down the Romaji all wrong ! Some words have long vowels or you have to make a brief pause between consonants ! What about those ?! Please don't teach this the wrong way to self study students !

I think most of these people "learn" from anime so a lot of them wouldn't know how to write/type in katakana or hiragana.

Well every word they learn, they should look it up and write it down properly.

I guess that's another problem. A lot of anime fans easily state that they want to learn Japanese. But when it comes to the proper spelling, hiragana, katakana, and grammar, they refuse to go to that and instead depend on anime, thinking they'll be able to learn easier that way. They believe that the more they pick up words from anime, the closer they are to learning the language without knowing the proper usage, grammar, etc... which is far, far from reality.

訪れる - to visit (I don't believe this is used with people)
現代 - modern era

P.S. For those of you complaining about kanji, there is an app for that (heh). It's called Rikaichan (or Rikaikun on Chrome). It allows you to mouse over a word in kanji and it will tell you what it is in hiragana as well as translate it for you. It tells you whether it's a noun, adjective, adverb or a verb (transitive or intransitive). It's very useful and you can use this plugin on both Firefox and Chrome.

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/rikaichan/
Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rikaikun/jipdnfibhldikgcjhfnomkfpcebammhp

※ Just remember to install the correct dictionary for your language after you install the plugin. Also, it will not allow you to keep your mouse over the word and type at the same time. You will find the window will flash all over the place and screw you all up.

I know
Just thought it would be more helpful in this thread to write it the proper way. Because it's about the words you learned, not the words you learned from watching anime. People who think anime will teach them everything are so annoying...

Grammar is hard in any language--even your own. I understand the gripe, though. However, most of the people who tote using anime as a pure tool for studying Japanese (I hope) are still in high school. I live in Japan and I am studying Japanese (albeit slowly). I do spend some spare time reading manga (in Japanese) as a study tool in attempt to help me learn casual ways to say things in conversation. It isn't all strange collocatoins that are strictly found in comic books. It really all depends on the manga (or anime--there have been a lot of anime television shows that had dark and adult overtones that were not sexual).

So learning some Japanese from anime, manga or Japanese drama? I say it's okay to a certain extent. I wouldn't place weight on it. I would invest in a good dictionary, download Anki and make some flash cards and throw away the idea that all Japanese people write Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji the way it looks when you type it into a computer--because I have seen so many people copy the syllabaries as if they enlarged the Kana in Word and then printed it off so they could master it. Same goes for Kanji.

So... this thread is about the words you learned, right? I'm just going to look again at what you wrote...

So it matters where you learn it? That's kind of not fair. Some of it can be annoying. But they really aren't all bad words (from anime, that is). Honestly, what you said kind of comes off hypocritical. I know this website has some Korean and Japanese drama, but this is mostly a place where you can watch your latest anime episodes (well, you can. I can't. I live in Japan). Still, don't be so judgmental.

Yes, it matters where you are learning it from. You make it sound like there is no difference between a textbook and a cartoon. And if it was all anime discussion and 14 year olds rambling on about how kawaii they are, then there shouldn't be a Japan subforum. Either way most people won't even read my reply and will go on posting messed up words in Romaji. And that's all I'm going to say about it, I'm in a bad mood to begin with and I don't want to start a fight.

I'm not part of this or anything, but can I ask what you have against romaji? I mean, since Japanese is a phonetic language, I'd imagine that it'll help with pronunciation. Even the Japanese use romaji to type in Japanese on their phones and pcs.

I have something against it when it is constantly used. When the person using it acts as if knowing romaji is the only thing they need to know and that when you can write every word in romaji that you are good to go. I have nothing against using it when it is needed, but the correct spelling should be used. Just scan the words people are summing up here and have a look at how many misspelled words there are. They seem to forget all about double consonants ...
