Sex or Violence?

Something I noticed is that America is hardcore against nudity in movies. A single boob=rated R. I’m not necessarily against it, but I think its stupid that we can have people getting sliced into pieces and it is still PG-13 but then it jumps up to R for a brief nipple.

I noticed that Germany doesn’t care about nudity at all. I lived there and people actually walk around in the nude. However, they were pretty strict on violence. (And environmental stuff. You get fined if you don’t recycle! They don’t even sell trash cans, they sell recycling bins!)

Anyway, I was listening to the radio the other day and it announced that in ratio to our population America has more violent crimes than Germany, but Germany has more sexual crimes than America. This being said do you think that sex and violence on television, video games, and movies really does have psychological effects?

I’m not sure. I think the entire thing is a bit misleading. America also has more organized gangs, many of which formed before the T.V got so gory. Prostitution is also legal in Germany, and so sexual concepts are generally more accepted there. In other words I don’t think that the statistics necessarily show that T.V, movies, and games are the cause of the variation between how many Americans commit violent crimes and how many Germans commit sexual crimes. It’s probably just culture in general.

This being said, how do you feel about violence and sex in movies and games, ext? Personally, I feel that it’s up to the consumers what they buy. I don’t think we should have a rating system. I think movies and games should just have a description of their contents on the back in general. As far as T.V, I think the channel should have a general theme to it. For example: Disney is generally intended for children, so they should play things appropriate for that age group.

I’m also really annoyed with the controversy about video games. Especially Man Hunt for the wii. It’s been described as “A killing simulator,” and it created a new rating for video games. It’s the equivalent to hardcore pornography, but they just call it AO. (Adult Only.) I think that’s stupid. They’ve actually shown (through statistics, or as I call them ‘wastes of money’) that violent video games can be beneficial. They relieve stress.

Also, the previously highest game rating was M, for mature. You had to be 17 to purchase one of them. This being said to purchase an AO game you only have to be 18. I think 1 year is ridiculous. There was no point in making a new rating. If anything they should have just raised the M age limit to 18.

Well do you think about all of this controversy on sex and violence?

Well "beging naughty is okay but beging violent is bad" I heard somewhere.

It is true that even small nudity is straight Adults Only...
Since I live in Finland here mild nudity is +15 I think.
So also goes for mild gore. +15

So I don't think it should be rated as if there is any more like that how much there is.
But I seriously think Manhunt is +18... It got all the rating tags and I think it is made for adult people.

So... I'm just babbling something stupid.

First of all... I'm glad that a tiny bit of nudity is rated R. Accidents can happen! (<- only makes sense if you think about it)
Secondly, wow. I thought America had all the high crime rates.
Video games, I just don't get. You're right. One year in the game rating doesn't make a difference at all.
Oh I wish I were more helpful, but I really can't think right now.

I do kind of think that the video games and movies we watch play an important part. I may very well be wrong but it feels as if you didn't have to be so afraid to walk home alone back in the days of good 'ole Pacman.

I'm actually annoyed at many channels I find on television. Some don't seem to stick with any kind of theme. At least Nickelodeon will warn viewers by switching to TeenNick, and Adult Swim is constantly advertising the "Not suitable for viewers under 16" (or whatever the age is). Other channels just don't seem to care what they show. I've found myself watching a something and then having to turn in disgust when a random commercial for Girls Gone Wild comes on.

Rating systems to me, are a good thing. Yes, it is up to the consumer as to what they buy. But consumers have parents who wouldn't want their kids playing a game such as Especially Man Hunt.

I'm actually glad they made a new rating for Especially Man Hunt, and I'm fine with it being available to those over 18. The problem seems to lie with the rating M, for mature. I'd think they would lower the age rating for Mature instead of raising the AO age. If you can buy porn at the age of 18, then I see nothing wrong with buying a pornographic game at the same age.

But all that aside, I think the United States should be less lenient with the violence allowed in movies. It does nothing but promote the things shown, chopping off five heads simultaneously with a rusty spoon, and such. It kind of leaves me wondering what will happen in 20 years, could we turn back to the whole lions den approach?
I didn't know about Germany being so open with nudity, I find that disturbing...I mean, thats what nude beaches are for. It seems kind of wrong to subject other people to witnessing you casually walk down the street in your birthday suit.

The worlds becoming more comfortable with violence and sex in general. Violence should never be taken so lightly, and I still think sex should be whats discussed in hurried whispers behind closed doors, not advertised on television and video games.

Yeah, I don’t think sex should be advertised either. But the Germans that walk around naked do so because they don’t see anything wrong with it. It’s not sexual. Now if a man were walking around with flag flying high there may be some controversy, I don’t know, but under normal circumstances most Germans don’t seem to mind. Obviously there are those that don’t walk around in the nude though.

Not suitable for viewers over 16"
Don’t you mean “under” 16? :p, may want to edit that.

Wow, Finland is that harsh? Apparently the Philippines are a bit tough on it too, but I agree with all of that. America is diffidently too open with sex and violence. This “Freedom of Expression” thing only goes so far. People are just using it as a crutch to get away with crap and the idiotic people in charge are falling for it!

That’s my opinion.

Anyway, keep up the comments. Thanks for your input.

^Oh, thanks. XD

And I understand that Germans have grown up being okay with nudity. Then again, someone who grows up around gangs and guns may think its okay to kill. I guess its just relative to what you've grown up with *shrugs*

HAHA. Well, in Marie Antoinette theres nudity (her nipple shows through the shirt) and it's PG-13. I think theres a lot more sex in PG-13 than in R. I think violence shouldnt be shown to the extent it has been but that's America. We're so perverted and bloodthirsty it doesnt matter.

I think mexican sistem of rating is easier to understand haha.

AA= Small Children (Disney Cartoons or Teletubiees)

A= Public in general

B= Teen Agers and above (Ej, Most anime series((XDDDD)), sometimes you see a nipple here and there, a little bit of blood or swearing)

C= Adults Only (You must have 18 to get so rent that movie, Usually gore, explicit sex, very hard language)

X= Porn

yeh but Saw III was supposed to be like that It was billed as a gore-fest of a film! I think it's hard to deny the fact that media has an impact on the way we act, and going about slapping a rating on everything is IMO the answer to it To give people an idea of what there about oto see. Althoughj i really dont think it makes a difference tbh, i wouldnt think twice about watching an 18 and im onoly 17, but thats not the point. Without turning into a "nanny state" all you can do is give warning of things like this.
