Well, I’ve found that the answer is yes. You can control your thoughts, in my opinion. It’s certainly a difficult thing but it is possible. I find that a lot of the time I allow myself to become angry or miserable. It’s only a half conscious thing, but I have a tendency to remind myself of past trespasses against me, misdeeds, and I dwell on these things and end up provoking myself in to more depression or more rage.

I find that if I make a conscious choice I can force thoughts out of my head. I also find that it is remarkably easier to do this when I keep myself occupied and keep my head full. For example, as a teenager it is easy for me to resist the temptation to go and act like another idiotic ‘rebel teen’ if I study a lot.

Another example:

As a Christian I find it easier to keep my mind off temptation if I read the bible and go to church more often. Shoot, if I even just get myself a healthy hobby.

What do you think? I know a lot of people say the mind is above your control, but I don’t think so. In my experience this isn’t true.

You have this really well thought out.

I think male instinct tends to take control sometimes, but I tend to push it away.

I think it takes practice to actually control your thoughts. But controlling your thoughts is a hard thing, full control that is. Which would include your dreams (lucid dreaming is amazing by the way, really interesting)^^

It seems kind of like cheating. To pretend to have control over your thoughts when your only blocking them with something (like studying). Once you stop, you'll go back to thinking about whatever you had in mind before studying, so its kind of like a quick fix.

Some thoughts or impulses are just too overwhelming to control. Which is a good thing I guess, it helps humanity survive in a lot of ways.

I've personally never tried blocking my thoughts or anything. I just let them come. Often its fun to suddenly imagine a pink dolphin swimming in the air. In the case that I want to do something I know is wrong, then thats where self-control comes in. At least I can think about punching a whole in a wall or something, I just don't have to act on it.^^

YOu can control your emotions to a point...your actions depending on your perception, and wisdom...but sometimes I feel you can't control your thoughts...you can control temptation and some bad thoughts, but generally I find I can't stop what I all of a sudden pops in my head...due to memory or experiences in life...just my gitz on the whole thing
