story line is one thing + is more in detail compare to manga.

but i still think that the skill of drawing from a mangaka is the most important. Image

Whenever I want to read manga, I look at the names of the characters, the story and the drawings first before I really read it^-^

The plot of course the drawing is very very important if the story's great I'll take a look but if the drawing is bad I won't continue reading so both the drawing and the storyline are important xD well I always read Shojo manga so the genre don't even cross my mind I go to Shojo manga forums (to dl) only so (>~<)/*

preference according to:
art / drawings/ illustration
storyline / plot
genre
mangaka

having a good visual is of uttermost importance for me since it will be what i'll be staring at for the duration of the story.

next, the storyline because it is always the soul of the manga

then the genre, i have genre preferences: shoujo!!

mangaka, because i have faith in some mangakas that they'll always bring good food to the table.

if the anime takes too long to make new episodes, I get tired of waiting and read the manga

The art has to be adequate (I'm a bit of an aesthetics freak) because I'll get too distracted by ugly characters, but if the plotline is intense enough, I can usually overlook substandard art. For example, I prefer reading Naruto to Alichino, even though the art in the latter is mouth-wateringly stunning. It just has a more intense feel to it.

Plotline has to be amazing. I'm not into reading soulless, unoriginal manga dealing solely with "pure maidens' hearts" and "high school romance." First of all, I can't deal with or relate to high school drama. Second, I very much doubt so many girls with innocent and pure hearts exist in this world. Call me a cynic. On the other hand, I hate mangas that smack you in the face every other chapter with a plot twist, like they're so clever... It feels like drowning.

Genre... Um, well, I usually stick with shoujo, but I acknowledge that a lot of shounen have more interesting plotlines, so I'll often stray from my usual shoujo titles to read 4-5 long-running shounen titles. Hikaru no Go and Naruto were some favorites.

As for mangaka? Only if their art is absolutely stunning or I find an element in their manga that I can't find elsewhere. MiRee Hwang and Yuu Watase are two artists I never get sick of (even though, yeah, MiRee Hwang recycles ideas and Yuu Watase recycles male characters).

Story, Character design (that includes the psychological side). art and how kick ass it is (optional but most of my favourite reads end up being kick ass in some way or another)
