'We have broken speed of light' By Nic Fleming, Science Correspondent Last Updated: 12:01am BST 16/08/2007 A pair of German physicists claim to have broken the speed of light - an achievement that would undermine our entire understanding of space and time. According to Einstein's special theory of relativity, it would require an infinite amount of energy to propel an object at more than 186,000 miles per second. However, Dr Gunter Nimtz and Dr Alfons Stahlhofen, of the University of Koblenz, say they may have breached a key tenet of that theory. advertisement Telegraph - Menswear/Shoes The pair say they have conducted an experiment in which microwave photons - energetic packets of light - travelled "instantaneously" between a pair of prisms that had been moved up to 3ft apart. Being able to travel faster than the speed of light would lead to a wide variety of bizarre consequences. For instance, an astronaut moving faster than it would theoretically arrive at a destination before leaving. The scientists were investigating a phenomenon called quantum tunnelling, which allows sub-atomic particles to break apparently unbreakable laws. Dr Nimtz told New Scientist magazine: "For the time being, this is the only violation of special relativity that I know of." |

I seriously can't fathom that we could theoretically arrive at a destination before leaving...but this is interesting, I wonder what kind of bizarre consequences they're talking about^^
Amazing. |

Now all we need to do is find a way to go into the future!

yeah..that would help.

i'm sorry alex...i'm really sorry...

i prolly wouldnt survive there |

i would dearly say that I would never want to see the first "living" experiments that try
to go the speed of light... "clean up, aisle.... spaceship" |

Well this does open up some possibilites. Maybe in the near future we will be able to click on a watch and it will teleport us to a place that we want to go to. It would sure help out the polution problem, no more need for cars or vehicles. Of course there would be limits, but since this is just a idea, nothing would actually happen.

At lot of stuffs odd at the quantum level...
shrug, for a similar kind of story, "Infinity Comes in Different Sizes" http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=DFCF15E5-E7F2-99DF-3EAAFAF2776CEFC5 Not that I know enough math or physics to comment on either... *lol* I just googeled these two physicists and got a result for meinprof - a German page, where the students rate their professors - actually Dr Stahlhofen´s "marks" are quite good...
I tried to find out some more, but there wasn´t anything on the university´s homepage - at least I didn´t see anything. I also checked with some homepages of newsstations and magazines - but they seem kind of slow... nothing online yet! Well - maybe tomorrow morning... |
