Sexism in anime, what do you guys think?
I was raised to be indifferent in gender. (although my attraction falls towards the female sex.. meaning that I'm heterosexual.) But that isn't the point I'm trying to make..

Do you think there is sexism in anime?
I often see it.. Many shounen anime have the male characters as the most dominant characters.. Even though they sometimes have kickass girls who fight, they're almost always used as support characters.. "Dragon Ball, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece" one of the reasons I dislike them..
On occasions it's the opposite direction towards magical girl manga, where there are few or almost no male characters at all..

Romances go both ways a lot of the time, but sometimes, even they may be sexist..

It's alright to think that way for olden times when women still had no rights.. But equality is lacking for anime that are placed in modern times...

I think this is true..

I don't think it's sexist. Animes are directed at different people, e.g. Magical girl animes are directed at girls therefore they have a female protagonist.

Sometimes, sometimes not. The reasons for it is that it wouldn't work out sometimes if you use a gender for certain characters.

I think Anime is Sexist but not in the reasons that you've mentioned. Have you noticed how Very Stupid Anime girls is revered as ditzy and cute? Stupidness is supposed to symbolize female innocence. Whereas Male roles have characters that are opposite, the more intellectual type. This is not the model for every anime, but you do notice this trend in characteristic when portraying a female character in anime. And if there is an echi anime with a bunch of female characters with lots of different characteristics, the dominant or the main lead female character is generally the Stupid, ditzy innocent one. Not the Emo chick, the Glasses Chick, the Samurai Chick etc.

I think they're playing more towards the demographic, more than anything else. And the fact of the matter is that the majority of young boys want to see other males in those types of roles. They want characters that they can idolize and emulate.

Now I will give on the fact that the protagonists in these shows are generally male, but to say that there is sexism in a shows like Naruto and Bleach is taking it a bit too far. There are too many powerful, wise, dominant female characters in those show for any claims of sexism to hold up.

In DBZ a case can be made, in One Piece, a bit of a case, but not as much.

I agree with you on this as well.. Girl characters are often given huge boobs and almost no personalities.. Their personalities all seem to be based on single traits.. klutzy, innocent, aggressive, quiet, straight forward, smart or naive... Female characters that actually have "personalities" are lacking..

I guess one form of sexism is in the many Harem series where all these cute, thoughtful, and likeable girls are after some thoughtless, self-centered, and demanding guy. This makes the girls look real dumb, and like their only purpose in life is to please some undeserving guy.
