I was raised to be indifferent in gender. (although my attraction falls towards the female sex.. meaning that I'm heterosexual.) But that isn't the point I'm trying to make..

Do you think there is sexism in anime?
I often see it.. Many shounen anime have the male characters as the most dominant characters.. Even though they sometimes have kickass girls who fight, they're almost always used as support characters.. "Dragon Ball, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece" one of the reasons I dislike them..
On occasions it's the opposite direction towards magical girl manga, where there are few or almost no male characters at all..

Romances go both ways a lot of the time, but sometimes, even they may be sexist..

It's alright to think that way for olden times when women still had no rights.. But equality is lacking for anime that are placed in modern times...

I think this is true..

I think Anime is Sexist but not in the reasons that you've mentioned. Have you noticed how Very Stupid Anime girls is revered as ditzy and cute? Stupidness is supposed to symbolize female innocence. Whereas Male roles have characters that are opposite, the more intellectual type. This is not the model for every anime, but you do notice this trend in characteristic when portraying a female character in anime. And if there is an echi anime with a bunch of female characters with lots of different characteristics, the dominant or the main lead female character is generally the Stupid, ditzy innocent one. Not the Emo chick, the Glasses Chick, the Samurai Chick etc.

I couldn't agree with the both of you more!
I absolutely hate the whole supposedly innocent girl type thing but is portryaed as just plain DUMB it's an insult to actual intellectual girls out there...and If I was a guy, I'd find the whole dipsy look totally un-attractive, not syaing that all animes are like that cuz there are alot of female protoganists, i guess u cud say it's based on who the target audience is for an anime....but nowadays, that is not an excuse, we're in the 20th century and animes could be giving the wrong impression on how real girls and guys are, even tho anime is fictional

i agree with all of you. I think most animes are sexist..since most are written by men for boys. In some anime's there is too much
( probably why I stopped watching alot of them). Some of the ones written for girls are also complete thrash. Their usually about some girls fighting for some one loser guy. That whole sqeaky talking- miniskirt wearing -knows-nothing- all innocent - kind of character commonly found in many animes annoy me too.

I don't see any sexism in any of the anime. How I see it all the girls in anime with male roles that are weak, to seem more feminine for the boys. While as in the other anime where the girls are the main people are pictured as stronger for the girl to know that they actually run things. (Its true, faster us guys know this the faster we can be safe from the womans anger.)

Thats how I personally see it anyways. To me the girl in the male role anime are far more powerful then the main man is anyways. In most cases they are always kick that persons ass for really wierd reasons.

rather than sexism, i think its more like generalization. so, in general all girls in anime & manga are created in tendency to become 2nd in line characters, as the support for the main characters (usually male). in some culture (especially japan) an ideal girl is the one that can support the man. so i guess this is why woman are generalized to be weaker or at least act as the supporting role so the main character will have more likely to get "save the princess" plot. but, nowadays i see more and more how do i say this, GAR-girls?? i think they start to realize that if the didnt start making a series with self sufficient GAR-girls, people (and mostly girls) will think that most anime & manga series are sexist...

this is where the market demands took place. most anime-otaku are in craving for weaker and cuter girls who they cant fight back when they cuddle and molest or something like that. But, personally, i like girls who can kick @ss, so they can protect herself if something is happening and kicks my @ss anytime i did something stupid

I suppose you've never heard of the anime Air Master.. There's a manly woman, yet they still use the sex sells strategy..

It's not sexism. Animes are created with a target audience

Animes were made by the Japanese, who are sex-maniacs. Therefore, women will be portrayed as stupid sex objects. It's just the way it goes.
