I don't know how many people have read this story but I thought it was incredibly relevant to CrunchyRoll.

A short summary, the company that distributes anime from Singapore, Odex, forced a bittorrent hub to release the IP addresses of people who had downloaded anime, and have sent a $3500 fine to the users.

Here is a link to the article. I wonder how many more companies will follow suit? What do you guys think?

Edit: mods can remove this, or merge as apparently a similar thread was made 2 months ago. Boy is the egg on my face

I think with more and more of these cases being taken to court it's easier for cases to not be thrown out. I don't know how I'd feel if I got sent a $3500 fine in the mail...

A company that distributes Japanese animated cartoons has tracked down thousands of BitTorrent users it accuses of breaching their copyrights and has successfully forced their ISPs to reveal their identities. Next step - threatening letters: “Pay Us $3,500 or Else”

First of all, they only own the distribution rights in singapore.
Second of all, they can't do anything to people living outside of singapore, unless they contact the FBI, which the FBI will laugh at them.
So for those of you that are torrenting Bleach in singapore... Sucks to be you, Everyone else... Stop freaking out, you're fine.

Looks to me like he's fining all these people for the cash he'll get from it, and in the first place, he was doing it because of money. What a dick.

I wasn't saying that the case was applicable to CrunchyRoll. I was merely indicating that the trend of IPs being given to distribution companies is becoming more common, whether it's for mp3s, film or software. Who knows how many more cases will come to court in the future.

Eh, well they're the same concept, its just that both provide different information

"Bittorrent users fined for downloading anime", the OP made it clear that this is only happening in Singapore.

"Singapore Company Cracks Down on Anime Downloads", the thread provides info on how they are suing anime downloaders for $3500.

But do w/e you want, I only posted the thread as a heads up. Tell you the truth I hate mini-modding.

man, this is horrible. i've watched a few discs from that company before. the quality sucks. i mean i can still see pixels on my 15" computer screen (can't imagine if it were on TV). and the subtitles are not entirely accurate either. plus i don't think they have it in DVD.
