Because we both live in Canada

Have you only recently moved there or do people in Canada speak a different language? I ask because you previously mentioned that you've only been speaking English for a few years. If that's the case, what language did you have to write those paragraphs in? I'm going to assume English, and if that's the case, I'm pretty impressed that someone who's only known the language for a few years was able to write something well enough to be one of forty people selected to attend the school, especially since those other 199 applicants have probably been speaking English their entire lives.

they dont just consider someone's knowledge of the english language. they consider how good you are and how long have you known of the language, etc.

lol. and being able to speak english is probably not the only thing they base their assesment on.

Edit: and canadian population does not only speak english. a whole province (quebec) speaks canadian french (pretty much the same as french in france, diff accent). and considering the immigrant population here. lol

What an insult… I wrote those paragraphs in English of course. There aren’t any teachers in my school who speaks Chinese. I wrote the paragraphs after I came to Canada for 2 years. I first applied to the private school I’m currently in now, I got rejected because they said my English isn’t good enough. Then the next year, I applied again. I took SSAT test again. They accepted me because I have great improvement compare with last year.. so yeah..

Edit to above: One of my friend who wanted to go to a private boy school. He was like 5 years old. The teacher wanted him to play a basketball game with the other applicants... so yeah.. not only english, other things as well

They speak french yes. But the majority of them know english as well as you and I, especially in montreal. You can survive in Quebec without knowing an ounce of French, but it will be difficult.

oh. well then, good job. :)

& I apologize if you felt offended by it, that wasn't my intention at all. I was just curious, because you said you've only been speaking English for a few years and all that.

I go to a catholic-public school....It's catholic, we wear uniforms and stuff....but there is no tuition fee required....and I guess...a student's success depends on the student's determination and attitude in studying....

^ Yes that’s correct. Sometimes the environment really affects the student as well

So truet it doesn't matter if it's public or private but it depends on how good YOU do and how determined you are.

Did/Do you go to a private or public school?

I do currently, though it's an "International School" which is a bit different from your average prep. school. Before that I went to average UK public schools.

Do you think going to either a private or public school would affect and/or improve your education and grades?

Going to a Private school did not improve my grades. However it gave me a chance to do better. This is not due to a private/public debate, but due to the difference between A-Levels and the IB. I would have got 3 (or maybe 4) As at A-Level. I got 40 points on the IB. 3 A's is equivalent to 36 points!

I think that otherwise I did enjoy my lessons more at private school because I was surrounded by more intelligent kids, and had teachers who were much more ready to be a "friend" as well as a teacher. In this way I became more engaged and learnt better.

Are private schools worth paying the tuition fees?

No. The fees are a complete rip-off. I couldn't afford my private school. I was only in it due to my dad's company paying.

1. I went to both a private school (Kindergarten - 9th grade) and a public school (10th grade - 12th grade).

2. I think it is ultimately up to the person and school. Classes aren't all the same at different schools so doing well in one class at _ school doesn't necessarily mean that you will do well at _ school. Schools have different standards and different leveled departments. It also depends on the sort of environment a student prefers.

My personal opinion...my private school was excellent up until high school. High school is where you can take AP, etc courses. Some private schools do not offer these courses, which limits learning.

3. Depends on the school, income, and interest by the child. If the child is going to jack around in private school, then there's no point in sending the child to a private school because s/he will not excel anymore in the private school than the public school.

I suppose my point is that it isn't a matter of private vs public, but a decision based on the specific school and person.

Random: The private school I attended boasted about having like a 2% better scoring on standardized tests by their students... ignoring the fact that the disabled kids at the public school took standardized tests too. I think the private school I went to was just a bad example of private schools, but there are private schools out there like this.
