Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In my opinion she is one of the beautiful ladies ever drawn!
But I also really understood her and think she was worth admiring, she was imaginative and crafty-- she knew how to get herself out of trouble, she was a magician in all but name, disguising herself as an old man, the disappearing act behind the cape was also a nice touch. She was talented, she could sing and dance, she was an artist. That combined with her charm, generosity and sweetness with her friends, and her defiance, independence and fire in the face of a cruel world gave her more depth than any Disney heroine I've yet to meet. I disagree most emphatically with the claim that she was superficial, which I have heard more than once. She cared about Quasi when nobody else did, just because she decided to make a future with Phoebus doesn't mean that she was holding something against Quasi because of his looks. Though Phoebus, happens to be tall and blonde I don't think she chose him because he was a pretty boy. When she thought he was a jerk and an errand boy for Frollo she detested him, and stared him down coolly, even drew a sword on him, gave him some good kicks in the armor. She never fawned over him just for being cute. And she doesn't like him for about the first half of the movie. When she changes her mind about him is not when she sees how nice his muscles are, but when she sees how courageous he is, standing up to Frollo, and saving a family from being burnt alive, facing execution. Then she fights to save him. Why is it so hard for people to believe that she liked him for who he was? Just like she liked Quasimodo for who he was. She liked Quasimodo because he was contemplative and a talented artist. I think she liked Phoebus because he was an honorable man. I think she started getting closer to him because they had more in common. Phoebus was older, and had a more assertive personality like she did, they had both seen the world and could seek an adventurous lifestyle together, she was passionate. Quasimodo was nice, but shy and really sheltered, almost like a little boy. I think she wanted to be in a more adult relationship.
