I got bored, so I typed this up. Call it 'an example."

Which am I talking about? Mobile Suit Gundam or Gundam SEED?

Picture the following: a peaceful colony where a young boy (and borderline brilliant robotics engineer) finds himself confronted by overwhelming disaster. Through the twist of fate, the enemy comes to the colony because it has been secretly housing top-secret mobile suit experiments and brand new Federation battleship. This was important because these mobile suits represented the first-ever mobile suits intended for front-line combat by the Federation against the enemy who had overwhelming battlefield superiority in mobile suit technology. The enemy was there to capture this technology and return it to their side. But in the event that it could not be captured, it was to be destroyed.

Moments pass, and eventually this young boy find himself in the cockpit of this experimental mobile suit. He rises up with a few moments of orientation and moves to pummel the enemy. His level of skill in operating the machine is incredible despite the fact he never touched the device before nor never knew of its operational instructions in its entirety. He defeats the enemy and then links up with the battleship which was designed specifically to support the experimental mobile suits. Once onboard, he meets many of his friends from school (and the rest of the colony.) But the disaster has caused a heavy price.

The captain is dead, and now a young and inexperienced young officer is forced to take the place of the captain of this state-of-the-art flagship. As well, most of the crew was killed amidst the explosions and carnage. To get the ship up to operational capacity, the young boys friends become integral parts of the crew. From navigation to communication, radar and weapons, these young adventurers help support the battling mobile suits while they keep the ship afloat. But the young boy is distressed. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone. He doesn’t want to fight this dirty war that the adults have created. He just want’s to live in peace.

They meet up with a combat hardened ace whom flies a mean aircraft. Though it is quite unfortunate that he dies later on in the series. This ace fighter (though rough in his approach) starts to teach this young pilot about what it means to fight for something. What it means to use the power you have to protect those you care for.

Their first task is to get back to Earth. Get back to Federation Headquarters. But they’re being chased by a mysterious masked man.

To earth they fight blistering battles in the desert against a gruff and awesome tactician of a man and his mobile suits. To the oceans they fight incredible underwater battles that the mobile suits just weren’t designed for but somehow pulled it off. All the while this young man is pooling from once untapped potential with almost limitless end.

Based off of the design of the showcased mobile suit, production model (cannon fodder) versions are constructed. From those, many specialized variants are also constructed. Eventually the battlefield is filled with these 'grunt' mobile suits.

He meets a young woman whom he falls for. But all good things must come to an end. She dies later and her death has a lasting and powerful impact on the young mans life. In the end, she was nothing more than a tool used by the masked man to accomplish his goals. Death, it would seem, is a major factor in this boys cultivation as he watches a friend die as well. His friend (in an aircraft) speeds in to protect the young man at a critical moment and pays the ultimate price in doing so.

Eventually they make it to the headquarters of the Federation. But the enemy has attacked there to and they must quickly depart. Back to space to fight the final battle on a satellite body (asteroid in fixed orbit) that would be the final, bloodiest, and largest battle of the war. The enemy’s new mobile suit of the masked man has incredible firepower (to include remote weapons technology) and amazing speed for its size. In the end both mobile suits are destroyed.

I suppose I could say this is the tip of the iceberg. But it is very much-so a moot point as Fukuda already openly said that SEED was supposed to be a modern adaptation of the original Gundam with some elements from the other UC installments. The mechanics alone I could pick apart what UC MS they stole the designs from with a little bit of streamlining.

hm. i preferred gundam seed.....in GSD a lot of things seemed like repeats....and athrun was being a girl. so ya...but then again...it wasn't all that bad. i think what i really like about the whole gundam seed/destiny thing is the questions they bring up. haha.
