Princess Mononoke is one of the things that got me hooked on anime. I love the fact that there isn't really any true "villain" in the film. Every character is well-explained and sympahetic (except maybe Jigo, but I really can't bring myself to hate him). I've loved every Miyazaki film that I've seen, and the only one of his personal films that I haven't seen is Porco Rosso. I also can say that I haven't seen a bad film come out of his studio, either. I just watched The Cat Returns last night and thought it was great. I really need to buy both that and Whisper of the Heart.

I was really excited about Miyazaki's film of Howl's Moving Castle, since I love the book. The only thing that disappointed me was the relatively weak ending, which was forgiveable in my opinion, given the strength of the rest of the film.

it was good

but before i saw it, the only miyazaki stuff i watched was his "family" ones
and i thought he only made that kind of stuff

so wen i watched it jumped outta my chair when i saw the blood and the gore in the first 10 minutes and went HOLY SHIT WHAT THE HELL AM I WATCHING..

then i checked the dvd again to make sure what i was watching was really miyazaki's

it was..so i decided to finish watching...lol

i don't mind blood, it's just i've never seen it in miyazaki's stuff
before i watched mononoke-hime, i watched kiki's delivery service, my neighbor totoro, castle in the sky, and spirited away.

lol it was good thou just gave me a shock

Totoro was my gateway drug... err... anime.

Naussica and the Valley of the Wind is probably my favorite of his films; the art is not his best, but I adore the storyline.

For those of you who enjoyed Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle I recommend reading the book if you haven't (and as long as you aren't too embarassed to wander into the YA section of the library/bookstore). I do like the movie, but Miyazaki changed the story a good deal, which seemed (at least to me) to create holes in the story. The world Miyazaki visually created was nothing short of lovable, but the book has a more developed storyline and characters... and it's funnier.

I believe it's based on a single-volume manga, but it was adapted and produced by Miyazaki. For anyone looking for more information on any of Miyazaki's films (or anything related to his work), nausicaa.net is a useful resource.

I agree that the book of Howl's Moving Castle is better, so anyone who liked the film should really check it out. It was written by Diana Wynne Jones, one of my favorite authors, who isn't too well-known in the states (but quite popular in the UK). Most of her books are out-of print (in the US, at least) and are kind of a pain to find, although any local library should have at least a couple of her books. My favorite book of hers is titled The Homeward Bounders, and it really blew me away when I read it. Also, for anyone who reads the book of Howl's Moving Castle, there is a sequel, called Castle in the Air which is also quite good.

*SPOILER* (of sorts)

I really want the computer game of Howl's Moving Castle that Howl makes for his little brother in the book (of course, given that I'm pretty decent at programming, I should just make it myself...)

*END SPOILER*
