There's reason why incest is taboo, its' basic instinct to know that incest is bad, it increase the chances of inheriting genetic defects and diseases. IWhen something is labelled incets, it is taboo. If it is not taboo, it is not called incest (at least not by the majority). What is incest? Many countries allow for cousins to marry, many don't. In old Egypt it was common for royalty to marry royalty (divine blood) meaning many times: brother marry sister. Many mythologies have stories about brother-sister relationships.
It takes time for genetic defects to appear, in families without genetic defects, that is: generations. If that is the argument it should be forbidden only at perhaps 3rd generation or so. It shoudln't be any problem. How often does history repeat itself thus. It woudl be in very rural areas with very few people to mate with.

And the argument is invalid on basis of defects anyways, since we allow people with genetic defects to breed as much as they want. These are a much bigger problem, beyond comparison, than cousins going nudgy.

If we are worried about the health of offspring we might consider other more important things as well. Trying to make stronger, healthier offspring rather than the average riff-raff.

Let me just point out that every person trying to condemn incest on the basis of it having a higher chance of producing defective offspring needs to understand why their argument is illogical, and thus irrelevant.

a) People diagnosed with various other inheritable genetic disorders that could severely impair a child are legally allowed to procreate.
b) Incest is outlawed in most States even when the couple is incapable of producing a child (i.e. infertile).
c) Speaking of chance, one has a significant chance of killing or severely crippling another human being every time one operates an automobile.
d) etc.

So let's just be frank here. Don't try to pull some "Science proves incest is wrong!" bullshit. Basically, incest is illegal because the idea is extremely distasteful to the majority of the population (Somewhat like, as others have pointed out, gay/lesbian activities were, and still are, distasteful to a large portion of the population).
