This reminds me... does anyone actually consider Viking Metal a genre of metal? I was wondering this, because I don't think that lyrical concepts a new genre make.

Aside from the lyrics, what would qualify Viking Metal as its own genre?

Viking Metal can be considered it's own genre. It's primarily dependent on lyrical concepts. The musical style ranges from folk metal (Otyg) to thrash metal (viking era Bathory) to Black Metal (Thyrfing and Enslaved), and I think there is some power metal out there too. I'm not sure if Otyg is technically considered Viking Metal or not, but it's often lumped in there with it. Alot of Black Metal has Viking Metal aspects to it, but most don't consider themselves Viking Metal unless they are exclusively based on Viking and Norse themes. Most people view Viking Metal as a branch of the Black Metal tree, but there are other sources as well.

Alot of it comes from the bands imagery, not just the lyrics. Corpse paint for example is rarely (if ever) used in Viking Metal. Baphomets, Pentagrams, inverted crosses and other tradtional "metal" occult symbols are virtually never used as well, with favor being given to liberal usage of runes and mjolners (sp?) and other norse symbolism. Virtually all genuine Viking Metal bands are from northern europe, mostly being out of Norway and Sweden.

As far as sound, Viking Metal typically has a balance of harsh and soft vocals (or extreme and clean vocals). Acoustic instruments are also often used, though not always. Most Viking metal is also sung in native northern european languages as well, though there are some notable exceptions (Viking era Bathory). Alot of Viking Metal is a cross between Folk Metal and Black Metal, though certain bands will lean more to a particular direction.

Typically, the main indicator for being considered a "true" Viking Metal band is the exclusive use of Viking and Norse imagery in lyrical content and over all appearance (costumes, videos, album covers).

Right, but lyrical content isn't enough to justify creating a genre.

So, you're saying that it is a genre mainly because of the presentation (that includes outfits, videos, and their languages, but not lyrical subject matter)?

I think I can buy that.

Yeah I'd say so, but it's more of the "spirit" of the music I guess.

Like how christian music is a genre, but contains just about every musical style out there.

I think style refers more to the sound they're producing where as genre is just means of classifying music and possible description of an associated subculture.

There isn't a 100% distinctive sound for Viking Metal, but the fast majority of it (for the last 15 years or so) is pretty much Black Metal with strong northern european Folk so it does have a sound, it's just not written in stone like many other genres.

No....most bands who claim to be post hardcore are infact one of those two genres. Post-Hardcore is a made up genre for bands like Saosin who dont want to be considered emo or screamo. Honestly when people try to place a band or thier own band for that matter in the "Post-Hardcore" genre which shouldnt even exist it almost infuriates me as much as people who consider bands such as Norma Jean or Underoath "Hardcore"
