Well I used to be very poor and go to one of America’s most pathetic public schools. Our area had the #1 teen pregnancy rating, and the #1 use of crystal meth in America. This being said it was rough, but required virtually no money. This being said we’re upper middle class now (Rich by my standards, but technically we’ve just hit upper middle, not high yet) and I go to private school.

I’ll shoot it straight. There is no real education in private schools. Most Christian academies completely replace history with religious and biblical events. Economy essentially teaches that anybody who’s not a Christian has no chance of success and is a pimple on the @ss of society. They use these things called, “Paces,” which allows you (regardless of grade) to continue on at your own pace. So if you suck at math you’re going to stay stuck at the same level and can graduate while on that level. English is full of religious poems and stories, and ignores Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Jack London, and virtually all of the great writers of history except C.S Lewis, and various other religious authors.

Discipline is not harsh either, contrary to popular belief. They simply ask you to follow the rules. You don’t get switched if you fail to do this. In fact, with a good excuse you don’t even have to do it at all. This being said, you will be expelled if you blatantly refuse to do any task. (Regardless of how demeaning.)

So, money wise: Private school is harder. Learning, public school is harder. Much harder. I’m not joking. Private school is a joke. There’s a reason those rich kids get all A’s. It’s not because their money makes their brains grow. Emotional- For me private school requires is harder. I’ve spent my whole life despising the upper class crowds, and now I’m having to get over my prejudice and rage. This being said, public school was much more stressing. I got into way more fights. (One fight here and you’re kicked out, so….) And as for the other ways… Meh, private schools a joke. Looks good for college, but is otherwise pointless.

That’s what I thought. Now that my family has made money and I go to a private school, I realize the mistake. The people here are sheltered and rich, (except one guy who pays his own way in,) but they’re -not- snobby. Though, they are set in their morals. They’ve been raised to live one way and by God their going to live it! Yet, this being said, most of them are still open minded towards other people. For example: The Christians at one church ostracized me and called me a heretic for calling God a scientific entity. Here, they disagree, but don’t judge me for my “heretical” theories and beliefs. (Which aren’t heretical…-_-…)

I've never been to a public school so technically I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I think it depends on what area you're looking at. Academically I think private/college prep schools are muuuuch harder. I don't say it sound stuck up or something, but there is a lot more work and more is expected of you. Even a public school friend of mine who has attended both agrees.

As for socially, I think they both are hard in their own right. Public school has more diversity so it challenges you're stereotypes and such on a regular basis, but private school can be socially hard for some people if you are a minority or if you go to the school on scholarship because you aren't as wealthy as the people who don't.

I think it's a misconception though that "everyone" at a private school is rich and stuck up, because honestly that's very NOT true. There are tons of work-study and scholarship people who go to those schools are just as wealthy as your regular public school-er!

I went to private school from preschool till senior year and I'd like to think I'm not stuck up. So generalizations = bad!! There are stuck up people in EVERY school!

Edit: Oh I just saw another point someone else brought up. I think public schools and privates generally have the same rules, it's just that private schools enforce them more. Basically they just don't let you screw around, and if you do screw around they call you on it. Not to be annoying or have a power trip, but because they REALLY want you do well. Private school teachers get paid a lot less than public so I'd like to think most of them are there because they really want to teach!

Edit #2 "English is full of religious poems and stories, and ignores Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Jack London, and virtually all of the great writers of history except C.S Lewis, and various other religious authors."
VERY WRONG!!! I went to a Catholic high school and I read at least 3 Shakespeare pieces, 2 Edgar Allan Poe, and many Frost poems! We even had to read a book called "Life of Pi" where the main character claims to be Buddist, Hindu, AND Christian. It's true in some of the theology classes Catholic ideas are very reinforced, but that's the consequence of picking a Christian school! They also had World Religions though so I swear as much as it seems like it, they are NOT trying to shove Catholism down your throat. As long as you're secure in your own thoughts/ideas nothing they could say would "convert" you anyway.

i dunno i have been to both and like educational wise... private is better and they usually teach like a grade or two above the public ones...
but like i feel if you go to a private to early then you will get like wayyy too much stress
a public is good in its own ways,,,, at least they don't have that much homework
and since private receives money from students they get to go on more field trips and they get out of school for summer earlier and they have longer holidays
overall each has its own strength

... obviously some did enough to respond.

Your questions lack sufficient depth for me to want to get into however. I'm not just going to post some more or less random stuff about private vs public.

I had been attending public schools both in the U.S. and the Philippines. The public school I used to attend back home had no air conditioner. Only the principal's office had one. Here, in the States, you might be poor as hell going in one of the public schools, at least you don't feel like you're actually in hell while studying in a confined space.

i used to go to a private school back then but when i got here in Australia, i went to a public school because of the expense...
i think public and private are quite similar, when you study hard, teachers recognize your skills. If your acting like rubbish, teachers will treat you as garbage in society.
maybe what SeraphAlford said about strictness is true, dumb people in public that doesnt care about the future who smokes in school, gang fights, wags, etc..
I mean you wouldn't see that in a prestigious school, yes?

good thing about here is that they dont look at your school when you go to college/university. they do an enter score/ rankings of all the schools in the state.
bad thing is every public is school is required uniforms, and not just uniforms, UGLY uniforms...
