Yup. These Harem shows seem like a big-time male Fantasy about lots of cute, available, desiring girls wanting the one guy. Not alot of draw here. Especially for the ones where the main guy is self-centered, demanding, unappreciative, and sometimes downright mean, but the girls for some reason put up with his crap. We're not taking real quality entertainment here.

I know all going after one guy I am sure there are more fish in the sea...common one guy can't be all that great usually he just ends up being some perverted moran .

The hole reason I don't watch much harem animes. There are some that At least like Utawarerumono change it up a bit and don't put some guys or girls who aren't perverted or horny 24/7.

lol pretty funny because ranma1/2 is considered a harem (I think) and the author of that story happens to be a woman (I think) well is memory serves me right.

I think the 1st harem created and animated is Urusei Yatsura created by the same author above... although I find the humour in it is quite dry... maybe the joke are just too old fashion for me *shrugs*

Woot for Tenchi-kama!
Seriously, though, harem animes have been going for almost 20 years now, and I don't see any likelihood of them stopping. Partly it's because of the "male fantasy" aspect. But it also gives men a chance to watch and say... "man, I may be a loser, but at least I'm not THAT hopeless." Harem animes are as much about coming to terms with yourself and your place in the romantic structure of society as it is about tits and asses.
People watching it can see another man (who they come to empathize with) doing things they might, themselves, have done. They can laugh at his misfortune while at the same time, completely understanding, because they themselves would have done something similar. In that way, it's as much a purge of your own failed romances, through endowing them with your experiences, as it is about the characters themselves. So of course they'll continue.
In other words, yes, your friend is right that one of the appeals is fanservice. But I think it's also about realizing your place in society, and being able to feel a sense of shared experience.

I guess I hadn't really thought about Ranma as a Harem. But It fits. And the real entertaining thing is that Kuno wants the "pig-tailed girl" Ranma, while Shampoo wants the guy Ranma. And Ranma wants someone else. This is real entertaining stuff, and not like the ones where tons of cute girls are after a one undeserving guy.
