hey, does the graphic novel fall in the same category as manga, comics, etc?

Yes it does pretty much. I always see graphic novel sections next to the comic section.

Like most people have said Japanese are called manga, Korean are called manhwa and Chinese are called manhua. Kinda like if you took a totally different word from any language like say uhm english "like" french "aime" it's just the language Manga = comic

That's hilarious. XD Manga doesn't have to be from Japan at all. .__.
Freedom of expression in the form of comics, dude.

I consider American attempts at manga to be called graphic novels. I don't want to degrade them with the term 'comic book', but I think graphic novel suits them well. And I do believe that all manga should come from Japan. As mawha [sp?] to be from Korea.

I guess this is down to whether manga is defined by its place of origin i.e. Japan or its art style. I personally reckon something can only be called manga if it was made in Japan, anything else would be in manga-style.

*Edit WOAH! ^^^^^^^^^^We were thinking the same thing! lol

Depends on what you make the definiton of 'manga'.
Could be pertaining specifically to the Japanese style of art/ storytelling etc.
Or
Could be taken literally, I mean as it's place of origin: as in manga is from Japan only, manhwa is korean etc

Frankly, I could care less. As long as it's entertaining, it doesn't matter to me where it's from, lol

Manga is defined by the place of origin and art style - which in this case is Japanese. Manhwa and manhua follow suit; defined by the place of origin and art style (Korean and Chinese respectively). The words manga, manhwa and manhua translate to "comics".

I don't really think that manga has to come from Japan specifically, just as long as the style is ok. I mean manga can come from Korea, China, or other places, but they're just called something different, but the style is still similiar.
