Update:

The character limit is set to 30 now

~shinji

---------------------------------------------------------------

This hasn't been much of a problem in the past but when people post on the site and have a long username, they stretch the page in a very annoying way. Since we don't really have a built in character limit for the usernames, I have made an unofficial limit of 3-35 characters for a valid username. Having a username that is between 30 and 35 characters is really pushing it.

So as of now, we will not allow people to have usernames longer than 35 characters. All users who currently have usernames longer than that will be sent a PM warning before having their account deleted.

Kind of crude don't you think? ~Just an example: They could have their account for a long while, then all of a sudden get a message saying its gonna be deleted.~ Unless I'm missing something where you can change your Username. I don't think thats kinda fair.

I agree.

From a practical standpoint, it doesn't make sense to have an account with such a long username. Just by looking at these accounts (if you've seen one), it more or less looks like it was created just for the sake of spamming (or leeching). They usually have no avatar, hardly any CR points, nothing placed in their About me! section, and if they're not recently made, they're pretty old, so it looks like no activity has happened much with regard to the user that created the account.

And in many respects, it isn't a big deal for profiles like this to get deleted. They might as well just make a new one, since there's very little to begin with before it was deleted.

And as with what Azngrace said, we do take into consideration several things before nuking an account. Sending them a PM, for one thing, is one of the measures we do to see if the account really is active. Plus, it's better to warn them in advance than just nuke them with no warning whatsoever.

EDIT:
Here's a prime example:

ya 20 characters should be plenty and thats still well under the new 35 character limit, i hope you don't lower too much though, i hate sites where i cant use a username just because of the number of characters.

Lol, ok. I that makes more sense if you put it like that. But I wondering, If they get a message from a Mod or something, wouldn't they be hesitant on replying to it, thinking they won't get a message back? (Maybe they might think it could be a bot or something)

And yea, I'm sure almost all the accounts with 35+ letters are mainly spammers accounts or whatever, but you do come across people who actually want an account like that. I was also just giving a thought into it , you wouldn't want to have an account like that for a while to get a message saying it was gonna be deleted.

Some people just make accounts to just watch shows on here not really socialize.

abvius u said some people just make accts to watch shows right? cant they make another one? its not affecting them and all they do is make another. and if the mods might say something like "please reply" or something then they would actually send it probably. most people wouldnt want 35 stinkin characters in it. like how edsamac found one it was just 8's at the end. i mean seriously!

cant they make another one?

Dunno Depending on the person whether they put up a fight or not. My guess would be though if they made an account just for that purpose and they get a message saying your account will be deleted for being to long, I think they would make a new one.

I was just making a statement that it was just a bit unfair to the people who have had an account like that and had a whole bunch of friends or what ever on it, then getting a message saying it was gonna be deleted. I think it would be a bit of a hassle to message all their friends saying they were forced to make an account.

Sure maybe if they put in the "Reply back" sure enough they might get replys back from the people who really care about their accounts.

^ Many of these people don't have friends. Personally, I'm hesitant in nuking people who have quite a number of friends. I usually reason things out with them. I don't nuke just for the heck of nuking.

As with people who don't want to socialize, horrendously long usernames still don't make sense. Even if they didn't see the message, and they realize their account is gone, I guess they'd probably just make another one. If it's long again, and we happen to nuke it again, I think he'll soon get tired of making long accounts.

But really, so much thought into something very simple.

Having a username with characters ranging in the 30's is absurd but still, account deletion is going a bit overboard don't you think? Unless that account is like brand new, has no friends, no CR points, and no uploaded videos [basically an account that's pretty much worthless] then deletion isn't a problem. But long time successful accounts shouldn't get deleted just because of their username, those accounts should be able to change it

EDIT: Even though my username is under the 30 character limit I have been told that it's pretty long

^ Exactly: we wont delete 'long time successful' accounts because they were made before this rule was introduced. Like you and edsamac said, it's only for the obvious spam/dead/multiple leach accounts. ^-^ We're not mean people, high on power, looking for any excuse to nuke people. This is for the benefit of the cr community, especially those who use the chat alot. ^-^ Who wants a name bigger than 35 letters anyway? That's what the headline in your profile is for...

you can also tell if they are active or not by the number of cr points they have. i think most email services have like a 20 character limit so if you have like 15 more than that i think your just bloody insane.

i haven't seen any long usernames yet, but i agree that it would be unfair to delete an account that has been active for so long on this site. anyway, my username is 9 letters so phew
