We've all seen them obviously. They're the 500+ people who keep AX running as smoothly as possible.

Now some may disagree and say "hey so-and-so was rude, or so-and-so was just standing around looking pretty not knowing wtf they were doing!"

But my question is, do you yourself think you can do better?

AX is a 100% non-profit organization, so naturally not even the CEO's get paid. it's 100% volunteer.

But what makes AX staff > con volunteers?

A heck of a lot more benefits.

Requirements:

Minimum age of 18
Staff must fulfill a minimum of 32 hours of work at Con.
Ability to take orders from managers and upper heads.
Having transportation to the Con is a Plus!
Bilingual skills are a Plus (truly optional - not something required unless you join Guest Relations)
Please note that staff must adhere to any staff rules and maintain professionalism and courtesy when dealing with other members and attendees.

Benefits

Your four day membership is paid for the Con.
You will receive a Staff Badge with Custom Art of your choice (some restrictions may apply)
AX Staff T-shirt
AX Staff Pin
Crash space for the four days of the con
Two meals per day
One complimentary membership you can give to a friend or relative.
Participation in Staff only Events.
Participation in Staff Raffle Prizes
A nice resume builder (you are helping to run the largest anime convention in the United States!!!)

Interested?

now, although the AX staff page doesn't have the online application updated, the "Staff Resources" (aka Human Resources dept) is currently RECRUITING POTENTIAL STAFF FAMILY.

When i say family, i genuinely mean it. Everyone is well composed, from all backgrounds of life, and various likes and dislikes to match your own. It's a perfect way to help out the largest anime con in the US, get some convention work experience under your belt, get anime hookups or products many won't ever get, and also you never know when those friends of yours will end up helping you out when you're really in a pinch even when con is over.

I will be sending out staff interview/sr meeting/staff open-house dates as the days come closer and as more people post their interest in this thread.

any questions or concerns? post 'em here.

I've been working in the Staff Relations dept. for 3 yrs now, so I'll answer them to the best i can.

Thanks much, and i hope to see new faces in our AX staff family.

it helps to sign up earlier so that we can put you into a proper grouping.

AX staff, depending on positions, holds different responsibilities, events, and meet times.

For example, SR department is a year-round thing, so we've already started the year off as of december in terms of physical results while we've been planning each year about one month after an AX has ended.

some teams do convention work BEFORE the convention, some DURING, and some AFTER.

so signing up early helps... especially if you want all the perks and better crash space.

again, it depends on the position. i work at-con two days prior to day zero as well as most of my associates and higher-ups.

You can work day zero shifts like Registrations division or Convention-Operations division subcategories, or you can do at-con-only as well. There are also some divisions like logistics that work far before even us to stage everything. they work before and after con, so the entire 4 days is fun time for them or they can choose to work with other divisions as a helper.

some divisions have fixed schedules while others don't. It's up to your division manager and your own time-management skills for you to ensure that everything goes in a way that is convenient for both you and your division.

certainly. I'm supposed to be doing recruiting on various media bases, so doing it on CR/Gaia/Myspace/Facebook = fun. ^0^

and because you aren't being paid cash but instead being compensated with various perks and free amenities, we do not need your social security #. the most personal items ANY staff will ever ask of you is for full name, address, phone, and your preference in food and drink as well as job experience (so having a small resume or just skipping that and interviewing with me or my colleagues is good enough).

We're a non-profit organization. sneaking anyone in for free hurts the money we raise just to pay for the accomodations and enhanced events and food rations for more staff.

All extra cashflow is given to charity. we are pure volunteer and only get enough to pay for what we do/use.

However, if you have any friends that are AX staff, they can grant you a free 4-day pass. Each staff member is given one free badge to any person they choose.

oh, and just so you know, sneaking people in is impossible.

we have armed and unarmed security, large number of staff as well as volunteers within staff, and our badges are high-quality, esp. for staff which use special holograms with AX logos.

any person caught even TRYING to sneak in can be punished with as little as a ban from the convention to as much as charges of trespassing.

I'd suggest you wait til next year and see when you're 16 if you can have your parents help you maybe do a 1-day volunteer shift, where you do about 8hrs of service under trained AX staff and then get a free day-pass.
