CRITIQUE OF CULTURAL RELATIVISM

Cultural relativism is illogical

•Disagreement among cultures does not prove that objective, universal moral standards do not exist. Otherwise, the FALLACY OF IGNORANCE is committed.
•Claiming that social relativism (what is) implies cultural relativism (what ought to be), the FALLACY OF NATURE is committed.
•We should also question the assertion that moral values are created by consensus.

Cultural Relativism does not work in a pluralist society.

•The definition of culture can vary from subculture to subculture.
•Almost all of us are now members of several cultures.

Cultural relativism confuses custom with morality

There are moral values that seems to exist in all or most known societies

•Moral values such as justice and parental duties to children, are regarded as moral duties in most known cultures.
•In the other hand, acts such as racism, and sexism are also widespread in most cultures. Yet they are regarded as immoral.
•Cross cultural agreement on certain moral values strengthens the case against cultural relativism.

Cultural relativism is divisive and creates a We/They mentality

•This mentality may justify the oppression and extermination of certain groups of people.
•Creates distrust, and inhibits tolerance which lead to nationalism, racism, sexism, and ethnocentrism.

Well, I'll give a short replay, without much of my reasoning.

To restate the question: within a relativist society can a theory which holds that there are unconditional moral laws be applied?

I'm somewhat confused by the question. Especially the meaning of the word "applied". Could the theory be put into service in a relativistic universe. In other words, could someone say, "hey, this theory says the way things are!" I suppose so.

I suspect the answer your teacher is seeking is something along the lines of...no. Because the theories are not compatible. If we take relativism as the case, then law cannot be separated from a certain viewpoint. Kant, on the other hand, considered categorical imperatives to be fundamental truths of the universe. Learn the moral law (which is separate from personal motives), then follow it. In a universe with no fundamental truths how could a theory hold that supposes some fundamental truth?

Meh, I'm rather unsure as I suppose I am considering the question from a non-relativist standpoint. Oh let me know how that paper goes.

When people seek help, it's best to talk it out with a family member, a friend or a adult that you can trust, however talking online with a bunch of strangers can also get one thinking. My eyes are always open and i am willing to hear about people's trouble, because everyone needs to know that there are other people out there that care.

I doubt someone can help me with this, but then again maybe someone can. When I was younger (from about 7-11) I was a drawing prodegy. I was insane at drawing pictures, and making up good works of art. Then one day I just stopped. Ever since then, I haven't been able to find an insperation. Its been years since I've had even a semi-good drawing. I just suck now. Can anyone help me?

i like to look at www.conceptart.org once in a while for inspiration.. and if i have artist's block its helpful to just start drawing random stuff to warm up. i flip thru magazines and draw ppl in ads.. or go to a cafe, put the pen on the paper, and just start drawing. the more frustration u have the less creative u are.. so just doodle some throwaway pages that no one will ever see, and hopefully u'll get back into the groove. ur prolly thinking about it too much cuz ur in a rut. dont think. feel.

was there ever a specific thing or place that inspired you? i'm not really good at art but sometimes i have the urge to draw something - just anything. but if i have no inspiration i just go to my local park and close my eyes. when something comes to me i open my eyes and start to draw. i use nature to help me because it's something i love. find a place or thing that you love and use it to help you.

So when my dad got back home I asked him to fix it for me and he took out the battery and put it back in and it started charging. -_-

small ッ means a pause and in the romaji reading the next consonant is repeated so it would be makurru which makes no sense because the small tsu means a pause but the ー means you make the last sound longer. hmmm. go ask Envie, she ought to know
