^ can i know the reason the mods keep the Japanese words thread not the Chinese one?

Anime is mainly spoken in japanese, most people on this site are here for anime (not all, but a large majority) therefore more people want to learn japanese...
However i posted that because i thought that these threads could all be combined together... ie, what asian words do you know... or somethign of the sort... list them all together...
and honestly, i didn't see a what japanese words do you know...

In today's world, it's essential to learn Mandarin. Let's share

I couldn't agree more.

I'm just started taking mandarin right now and almost started a topic on it myself.

你 好 (ma) ?
我 很 好 , 你呢 ?
也 很 好.

ni hao ma?
wo en hao, ni ne?
ye hen hao.

"How are you"
"(I'm) very good, and you?"
"(I'm) very good also"

And that is all the chinese I've learned in a week... that and those damned tones.

Anyone know any good reference sites for mandarin? I don't mean sites that teach it (that's why I'm taking the course), but just good lists of information and/or better than the average online dictionaries. I'd love to find a good reference site for characters.

Also, any recommendations for movie/tv shows in mandarin? Content isn't much of an issue, I just want to hear the language spoken more to get used to the tones and rhythm. Apparently I'm learning the Beijing dialect, so anything of that nature would be appreciated. If it's here on CR that would be awesome, but maybe just some popular movies I can rent at the hipster indie/foreign movie place on campus would be cool too.

On that Beijing dialect note, for those of you fluent in mandarin, what are your opinions of that dialect?

I think the mods should just rename this "Mandarin Chinese Language" or something, I think there is quite a bit of discussion capable here.

And I do believe people need to be more aware of how important this language is... it's the most widely spoken language in the world (over a billion people speak it!). Not only that, but China is seriously on the rise these days. I fully expect them to become the new world superpower within the next 10-50 years.

o.O I thought english was the most widely spoken language. Then followed by French/Mandarin o.O

I might be wrong so dunno

And oh on Beijing dialects. Haha I love it. I understand it more than taiwanese dialects which just sounds like mumbling.

Beijing people tend to add er sound after everything.

For example:

Popsicle is Bing Gun.

but in Beijing dialect they would be more like Bing Guer (< --- not ping ying but how you would pronounce it)

And if you want to learn more mandarin, watch those actual chinese dramas that are from the mainland (the ones about older people or police/crime dramas) and not the taiwanese ones (they'll worsen proper mandarin and give you bad habits). You can try Wu Xia, but that might confuse the hell outta you.

You do realize that Spain and all Latin America speak Spanish? There are soo many dialects in China it will have you if you have to learn them all. If you walk 100 km from a place, there will be a new dialect

well, as i had it explained to me, mandarin is considered a dialect. there are many sub-dialects, but more or less they can understand each other so it's considered one overall dialect. cantonese for example would be a serperate dialect.

spanish is consistently top 5 from what i've been seeing online, and english is usually #2. hindi is up there as well. mandarin has consistently been #1 with over a billion.

here is the wiki list that has several different estimates from a variety of sources:

And you know africa speaks french. And France (obviously), swiss, and tons of the european countries speaks it. Not to mention Quebec and the maritimes area of canada. And ... new orleans.

Spanish is not a useful language unless you live in the southern part of the USA because not a lot people will venture into central/south america for reasons other than leisure.

edit: I stand corrected with that wiki link, but Its still not as useful as french.

edit 2: I correct myself again. That list shows native speakers. Which proves nothing on total use the language. Look at the English as the second language numbers. It raises the total count for total useness of the language. So with that look english is still on top as the world's most spoken language.

hmmm, i'm not so sure i agree with that. spanish is rapidly becoming more important in the US. at this point, i'd say we're effectively becoming a bi-lingual county thanks to unregulated immigration. right now this is most apparent in the southwestern US but it's really being felt everywhere now. my sister works in healthcare and says that it's almost essential for her to speak/understand it... and she is in indiana. i'm of the opinion that at this point it's best to teach spanish from day one of school to children.

but this is really starting to get off topic.
