On that Beijing dialect note, for those of you fluent in mandarin, what are your opinions of that dialect?

Beijing dialect (what I speak) is considered "proper" Chinese. If you have a Beijing accent and you travel to places further inland where accents are more crass and varied, they consider you to be "posh" or they have the opinion that you think that you're better than them.

Beijing and Shanghai often rival each other. Shanghai-nese people often think they're better than Beijing due to their city being more modern, more metropolitan and that it has a steady influx of foreigners that bring trade (and also push up the housing prices to an incredible level). Beijing obviously has her pride as the capital city.

Whilst I'm all for this thread because I agree that Mandarin is an important language to become accustomed to, can people typing in pinying please be careful cos some of the ones I've seen are really wrong.
Sorry if I come across as incredibly arrogant or whatever but it's the little things like that that annoy me. ^^

*EDIT to above: Cantonese users get out of this thread. Cantonese isn't Chinese.

*EDIT: Joking, by the way. But I do loathe Cantonese with a pash.

why do you loath them? their language is quite nice... i think.

^ It's not nice at all. Not meaning to offend people who speak Cantonese but I really pity them.
Listen to the language. It's horrible! The sounds are just wrong.
I'm not completely ignorant of the language. I know quite a bit myself from travelling around China and also some of my family listen to Canto music (ugh) so it's not like I'm disliking the language for no reason.
Mandarin is beautiful and fluent. When you listen to Mandarin it's like whilst when you listen to Cantonese it's like
Well for me anyway ^^

Probably they gave the Chinese people speaking English sterotype. Haha, seriously its only the canto fobs that speak English that way.

I have a northern accent... which specialise in not being able to distinguish flat tongue and curved tongue pronunciations.

Example: chi and ci. To use they are all sounded and pronounced mostly the same.

I don't speak canto but it does sound a little harsh and choppy when i listen to ppl speak it. but of course every dialect/language has their own uniqueness =] I speak mandarin but i really dislike how people with beijing accent think highly of themselves. china doesn't evolve around beijing so stop thinking that you're better than everyone else just because of ur dialect. same goes for canto people. they think they're so much better than mando people because they're in general more richer. we can't people just appreciate the different dialects and their uniqueness and let it be. O><O

^ Despite me coming from Beijing and knowing that people in Beijing generally tend to think highly of themselves, I can to an extent understand why they think that though.
But now it's increasingly becoming the case where other cities like Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangdong etc are being more recognised so I guess it is time for Beijing to step off her high horse.
Although that won't happen til after the Olympics.

They can think that but it doesn't make sense..it's not right at all. Sure the big cities are important but a country won't raise in its standards if it just had those big cities. besides, I think the big cities needs to be realistic and start looking at the bigger picture rather than selfishly at itself all the time. seriously..the rich and poor are at such a huge gap in china compared to other countries. china needs to change this fact before she can ever think about developing any further. lol..i think i went off topic...
