it depends. if you're smart enough, it's okay. just don't get in with the wrong people or something. but for the most part, the internet is pretty safe if you have any sense of smart.

There is no anonymity on the Internet and the Internet never forgets. Any hateful word or ill considered picture no matter how password protected will be here forever and be eventually hacked. Don't trust it with anything personal (even in chat) unless you are strong enough to deal with it being exposed (btw you are).

People share their trauma like an infection and on the Internet that spreads much faster. You eventually get exposed to everything if you want to see it or not… and there are a lot of deviations that are just difficult to forget. I date from before the Internet and people were bad without it... but with it they really cut loose. However people cut loose with kindness here as well like they would never do in the outside world.

You feel intimate with everybody online but the cake is a lie.

Be strong and exercise self-control and the Internet is fun enough. Never feel bad about bad things done to you or threats against you... that is the other persons infection trying to spread. Tell somebody IRL you trust (and if they fail you tell the police).

To me, internet is scary. I think there was a point where I was addicted. But I got over it.

The internet is only as harmful as the end user wishes it to be.

Well, you can't buy anything on the internet without giving your personal information, google tracks your interests, and facebook does the same. Crunchyroll probably has logs of what anime each member has watched for marketing purposes. Amazon, barnes and noble and others have a list of every book you have bought from them. Same for digital music stores and game distro services like steam. I havn't used it yet but I heard that windows 8 will require an account with microsoft to use. Cell phones that are connected to 3g networks can not only track what you do but know where you are with gps. I don't know, there is a lot of privacy issues on the internet right now, If you care about that. I'm more concerned about that than viruses at this point.

The internet, like with most things, is only harmful when used irresponsibly. Unfortunately for the world, however, there are far too many people out there who are irresponsible with their net use.

Personally, I can't wait to see how my generation's children turn out never knowing a life without internet access. I mean, I vividly remember a time before I'd even heard of it (let alone seen it used), and I'm pretty sure I could go without if I needed to, but it's just too useful to not have it around. I mean, we have the whole of human knowledge at our fingertips, for crying out loud. Even 4chan represents an unprecedented amount of information exchange, as horrifying as a lot of that information tends to be. Before the internet, most of us had to rely on books, TV, radio, newspapers and paper filing systems in order to get even a fraction of what we can today, and most of those methods were cutting edge as recently as 20 years ago; now, they're all but obsolete. Don't get me started on social media; up until about 10 years ago, you had to go to chat rooms and BBSs to get anything like Facebook, and even then, Friendster and Myspace were the hot social sites.

As for the whole personal information thing, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Any CS major can tell you how easy it is to track an IP address; all the ad services do is automate the process and search their own databases for the ad that best fits the search results. What a lot of people don't get about computers is that they're really good at storing and copying data, and with the right software also become really good at searching databases for information relevant to specified parameters. Because the protocols that allow the internet to exist are by definition machine-readable, it is childishly easy to track those protocols to locate a specific user and know all that the internet knows about them.

So, the easiest way to use the internet responsibly is to not do anything you wouldn't do AFK (of course, some people are irresponsible AFK, too, but at least those people can be punched in the face whenever they do something stupid).

I have been desensitized by the Internet and now lack the capacity to feel normal human emotions.

Just don't do anything stupid like google "How To Make A Bomb" or give away sensitive personal information like full name, home address, phone numbers, credit card info, Social Security number, etc. to just anybody.

Anything is inherently dangerous or harmful if misused. Nothing in this world is idiot-proof. Just when you think it's not possible for someone to screw something up, they'll exceed your expectations and beat you with stupid.
