That bastard! He is brutally honest but JUST WHY IS HE SO DARN SEXY ABOUT IT?! *bang wall*

Bah.. More NANA rants. Don’t read on unless you’re planning to bore your anti-NANA ass away.

[Discussion]

You know… everytime I’m completely whisked away to Takumi’s side, the next chapter appears and before I know it, I am hoping Hachiko eventually DO divorce him in the end. Or maybe not. I’m confused. Perhaps, like Hachiko, I am but a fan who has grown used to his womanizing ways so despite his countless infidelities, I cannot bring myself to hate this character.

OHHH HECK WITH IT! IT’S BECAUSE HE’S HANDSOME SO HE GETS AWAY WITH A LOT OF BULLSHIT IN HIS LIFE! THERE, I SAID IT!!!! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t believe I said it. O_O)

Because I am thoroughly interested in TakumixNana relationship. I’m just going to focus on them and disregard the fact that Shin is slowly growing up and becoming a little stronger on his own.

Shin calls Hachiko and you could tell how strongly connected these 2 characters are from the way Shin calls Hachiko ‘Mummy’ and how Hachiko is tearing with worry and relief for him.

Hachiko tells her ’son’ that “recently, for some reason, daddy has been coming home very early and even brings his work back with him.” with a troubled expression. From that, you could tell she just isn’t that happy even though he’s on, how shall i put it, ‘good behaviour‘. Shin is shocked at this, but Hachiko replies that she knows he got ditched by a woman but “he will find a new lover soon” and that “Mummy’s battle is never-ending.”

Even though it’s true that Takumi is a playboy, but hearing that he has other women from Hachiko herself makes him feel uncomfortable.

(Ah, Hachiko, it seems you really understand your tardy handsome bishounen kareshi very well.)

Takumi never ceases to amaze me because through this whole chapter, he plays the guardian for a lot of people… Shin.. Reira (especially).. and even Ren. He does things that’s very blunt and may seem insensitive to the people involved, but that’s just his style of protecting them and making them confront their problems instead of letting them continue to run away.

Takumi grabs the phone away from Hachiko and after a conversation with Shin, Takumi passes the phone back to her with a sad expression. I’ve honestly never seen Takumi carrying such a troubled expression until in recent chapters. True enough, it speaks volumes about how much he cares for Reira. (WHICH IS SHIT! I JUST WANNA KICK HIM IN THE BALLS AND TELL HIM TO LOOK AT ONLY HACHIKO!!!! I HOPE HACHIKO DIVORCES HIM IN THE END SO THAT HE WOULD WAKE THE FUCK UP!)

*clears throat before continuing*

Takumi is blaming himself for the fact that he himself ruined Reira’s happiness for driving Shin away from her. Out of his own selfishness, he had stolen the one thing he did not intend to take from Reira and because of that, he is guilt-ridden. He must have thought that he could bring Shin back into Reira’s life so that he could at least lift this guilt and burden up from his shoulders and then, he wouldn’t have to hurt the 2 important women in his life. But Shin’s refusal to budge puts even more weight on his shoulders and you can tell he (Takumi) is suffering a lot from all of this.

Takumi.. Takumi… if only you had not pushed Reira and Shin to the edge, perhaps all of this could have been prevented.

Shortly after that, Takumi receives a call from Ren’s ‘nanny’ who tells him about Ren’s consumption of drugs. In the middle of the conversation, Hachiko actually stops and draped a blanket over Takumi (AH.. HACHIKO!!!! TAKUMI DON’T DESERVE YOU AT ALL!!! *fangirl bitch cries*). She smiles understandingly but that smile tells you everything about how much Hachiko truly loves Takumi.

Knowing that he has some matters to attend to himself, she gives him privacy and walks out of the balcony. Takumi’s expression softens as if silently grateful for Hachiko’s kindness towards him. It is terribly amazing how much Hachiko has come from. From that weak, naive girl I first read and saw in episode 1 of Nana the anime… here at chapter 73, she has evolved into a matured, strong and kind woman standing beside her man no matter what the obstacles are.

When Takumi grabs a coat and heads for the door, he tells her that he has to work and not to wait for her with a sorry expression. At this point of time, I’d like to point out that Takumi’s expressions tells me that he knows he is hurting Hachiko with his work or should I say, “work” matters and he is silently apologetic for that but he could do absolutely nothing about it. Immediately despair came over Hachiko and in her mind, she knows she has to be strong again for him — She knows that for a fact, but she confesses that she is very tired too.

Ah… you see? When you place yourself in a relationship with someone with almost nothing to lose. It is painful, suffocating and tiring. I’m impressed that they could actually last for so long. They’ve come a long way as well. *nods nods*

Despite her doubts and insecurities, she has to lower her head and apologise to Takumi for ‘accusing’ him of thinking about other women despite his heavy workload.

Takumi smiles helplessly but is relieved silently that she doesn’t hate him for his ‘tardy’ behaviour. But one thing I do respect about the couple is that there are really no lies between them. If Takumi wants to cheat, he certainly doesn’t cover them with lies. He doesn’t lie about his other women either. Between them is some sort of strange connection that I fail to understand with Hachiko understanding him and his womanizing ways and him understanding her and perhaps taking for granted that she would always forgive him no matter what he does outside. Instead, he says, “I do think about other women. But you are the one I truly love.” -As shown from the above picture.

Even I, as a fan, is stuck between loving and hating him again. Hachiko acknowledges that feeling too and is unsure whether she should be happy or not, however she admits that Takumi has become more good-tempered and responsible lately.

“Give me a biscuit and my tail will wag –I will even regard you as my best companion, no matter how badly you might treat me after I’m done with my treat.” Isn’t that how Hachiko has always lived her life? Strange, why does this seem so familiar to me? *tears* I’ll probably end up being one of those girls who have battered women syndrome.

Once again, Nana narrates: “Regarding Reira’s affair, he(Takumi) requested Shin-chan’s help in such a straight-forward manner. I must have been thinking too much into it(TakumixReira’s relationship). But if that’s the case, Reira must be desperately waiting to see Shin-chan again. Will Reira be able to wait for the day when the one she loves gives her strength and finish the great task that I failed at?”

This is pretty confusing, but I’m guessing Hachiko wants to give Takumi strength, but she knows she failed. (Is this a clue that they would eventually end up with a divorce as well? On special occasions, this fangirl heart of mine is hoping they don’t.)

Takumi visits Reira after attending to work matters. Reira is shocked but she thought Takumi visited to see Ren. Takumi dismissed that by saying he knows that. Takumi tells her to wait for Shin no matter how small that possibility of him coming back would be.

Again, Reira is driven into depression because she is unable to meet Shin. Takumi is uncomfortable and tries to comfort her but Reira is hysterical and tells him “I cannot live on with just dreams! If I can’t meet him, I’ll die from loneliness!”

Takumi (that cheating sodding basket of a stupid case) with a resolved expression tells her seriously, “I won’t let you die” and he leans in to kiss her.

Thus, you can hear my heart breaking into a thousand of pieces as the chapter ends and leaving me with a lingering bitter taste in my heart.

Save me. I am truly obsessed.

Moving on to some stuff I’ve noticed…

“I am somewhat drawn to complex and complicated things. When I see characters or things of that nature, I have this compulsive need to dissect and devour them whole.”

But I digress.

After faithfully reading NANA, I’ve finally realised why Takumi was unwilling to become Reira’s lover at first but was more than ready to do it with some other random women. Both Hachiko and Reira are very important to him and he is sparing a thought (however darn fucking small it is, hey, it’s the thought that counts right?) for the both of them.

He knew Hachiko knows Reira is important to him in a way. I don’t think he is that stupid not to notice Hachiko’s feelings. If anything, he is the only person closest to her right now who can see through her thoughts and actions. If she were to find out that Reira has really become his lover, Hachiko would definitely be depressed. And from the way their relationship is developing, it feels like Takumi would also feel troubled if Hachiko is depressed which is great progress since Takumi seldom spares a thought for the women around him.

The fact that Reira is so willing to become Takumi’s lover despite knowing he has many lovers and 1 wife he would eventually go back to in the end shows that in Reira’s world, there is already an empty hole in her pitiful heart and that desperation shows she needs just about anyone or anything to fill it. In Reira’s case, he knew that if he were to become Reira’s lover, she would feel even MORE lonely than she already is now and she would begin to rely on Takumi more than ever (which is something he wouldn’t want to encourage with Hachiko in mind). That is why he explained that he doesn’t want to become the ‘kidnapper that the victim falls in love with’.

So in the end… It isn’t because he doesn’t love them, he simply has a different way of loving the women he regards important in his life. Which is, in my opinion, simply pitiful and pathetic if this was his way of loving someone. I’d say, be a man and have the balls to stick to a woman, you little lousy, cheating piece of bishounen bullshit!

[…With all that said though… is it safe to say that he is also referring the ‘victim’ to Hachiko at the same time so *maybe* he doesn’t want Reira to go through the same hardships that Hachiko has to face alone? (But wouldn’t saying that mean that Reira is the most important person in his life and Hachiko only comes in second because he had to make Hachiko go through that all on her own!? ….(pause) But if I were to say that, does that mean that his desire to possess Hachiko because of his love for her is stronger than the fact that keeping her by his side would make her suffer?! Hey! That kind of selfishness is pretty cute and charming! So should I fucking hate him or should I not?! …BLOODY HELL, I’M GETTING CONFUSED!!]

With Shin not budging at all, he weighed his actions of whether he should return to Reira’s side. His decision is obvious in the last page of the chapter, of course, and of which I silently cursed at. But I think I understand. In order to redeem himself a little bit from all that has happened (although in a wrong way) and to save himself from the guilt he was feeling while not being able to stand to look at Reira fall into despair alone, he chose the most obvious answer to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. … Like i said… that bastard!

Besides, his confession to Hachiko was more than enough to stamp down the fact that she (Hachiko) is the only woman he will ultimately return to. Is it enough for Hachiko to remain in a marriage with him? I honestly don’t know if that’s enough.

The emotional woman in me will tell me that perhaps Hachiko should stay even if she’d have to live on forever with emotional fatigue and doubt — because I feel that Takumi is the most pitiful character in this manga. While others have already found their own happiness (heck! Even Nobu has found a love which he feels comfortable with) or are close to having a resolution(no matter how big or small they are), he is still stuck being ever the pacifist –fulfilling his duty to protect the people he cares for and making them semi-happy with their lives even if he might have to forgo his own happiness.

He might appear heartless and cold with his words but it’s his way of covering the fact that he cares a lot. No doubt, he probably makes the wrong decisions when it comes to love, but afterall, he is only human. One can only be so good with one thing and not another, so while he is exceptionally good in his work, he is clumsy and ignorant when it comes to love. The emotional woman in me agrees that Hachiko should stay for the very one reason that she is the only person Takumi could come close to calling a ‘haven which he can rest peacefully before confronting the world again’ and it would be pitiful if she were to leave because that would mean he would *really* be alone despite having many lovers and fans. While he goes out and meet many different people everyday, at least, in the end, he would come back into her arms right? BAH! I’LL SAY IT AGAIN: IT’S BECAUSE HE’S HANDSOME AND RICH! THAT’S WHY HE GETS AWAY WITH THIS KIND OF BULLSHIT!!! I WANNA BE A MAN JUST LIKE HIM! (shit, that sounded wrong.. I better erase tha)

But the rational me would tell me that Hachiko, for the love of Gina-sama, should just go ahead and leave him already since there are plenty of reasons to do so. He makes her tired, lonely, depressed. He makes her angry and builds negative energy around her and her baby. However, after what I just said, I think I’m starting to agree with Hachiko back when she said that “there are also reasons not to (divorce Takumi).”

Now on to some rants with Reira. She is, I confess, one of the characters which I dislike yet at the same time can’t bear to dislike her at all. She is another one of the more pitiful characters in this manga and once again, so very human. While she sings and writes songs with an exceptional gift, she is yet another person who is, like Takumi, clumsy in love. So clumsy that she trips and messes up completely, then in order to keep her balance, pulls someone (*cough*Takumi*cough*) down with her. What a mess! Yet despite all that, I cannot dislike her. Because she punishes herself for her clumsiness. Reira strikes to me as someone battling with herself daily. She suffers from unbearable loneliness and she knows herself that she is too emotionally weak to stand it. She buys love (Shin) in order to fill up that emptiness in her heart, but very gradually, it becomes a habit for her to grab onto that temporary image of love to maintain full balance whenever she trips. When even that kind of love leaves her, that emptiness would grow even more and unable to fill.

Sigh.

Human relationships are the most complex of all. One almost never have a concrete reason for the stupid, foolish things they do and even if they might, sometimes their actions can still be confusing to decipher. The author is really good to have given these characters some sort of a ‘real life’. It’s as if these characters are living. They are flawed individuals, no doubt *human*, but also flawed individuals which we, readers, have grown to adore and feel for.

wow. you really thought about it, huh?
but, yeah. anyway, what you wrote are my thoughts exactly. after reading, i just dont know if i should laugh or cry! i know how you feel and i agree with you completely!!!!! i do feel that takumi is the world's biggest jerk and is most likely the closest thing to being the Demon Lord himself, but i can't help not to hate him and even wish he IS the man who hachi ends up with. i don't know why but there's this unexplainable thing that keeps me wishing that takumi and hachi will work things out no matter what even with nice guys like nobu around. i can tell there's this really strong bond/connection between them, and for some reason it keeps me hoping the best for them both.

XDDD. Gentle water since your going to rant I might as well too. don't worry your not alone I'm obsessed with Nana too.

For me though I despise Reira without even sympathizing with her. One she's pathetic and desperate I never like those type of people. Wait let me correct myself, she pathetic and desperate AND in that process hurts other people which THAT I don't like at ALL. It's true I'm pretty torn whether Hatchi should stay with Takumi. I'm a romantic so I usually say I want those two together, but however in the back of my head I wonder why isn't Hatchi leaving Takumi?

Takumi does ultimately go back to Hatchi everytime. His idea of love is SICK. I agree that he IS a pitiful character. And I wish I NEVER meet someone like him in my entire life. I feel really bad for Hatchi, because I know she deserves more. Takumi doesn't deserve Hatchi, he actually got something more than he ever will WHICH ANNOYS ME BECAUSE I DON'T THINK HE ACTUALLY KNOWS THAT MAYBE THATS WHY HE'S TREATING HATCHI LIKE SH*T.

Truth to be told I want to see some dramatic change in Takumi. If he doesn't in the end, I'm gonna be pretty pissed. The whole Handsome and Rich yea that is true, that's how the world really works which is sad. But before the rich, he's got away with it using his looks when he was younger.

I want Reira to go die in a little hole, I don't even feel like being rational with her, because so far I don't even want to consider that she's lonely and what not. Because her way of getting rid of lonliness, I just hate it, it's immoral. I'm actually big on morals, or at least my morals.

And in the present time, If Takumi still cheats on Hatchi (I won't be surprised) I'm going to be pretty angry. Because that just shows that he's a dipsh*t that can't even consider the feelings of his wife and child even after 5-7 years. IMO Takumi needs a wake up call. He needs to know Hatchi can leave him any time she wants too. And truth to be told I think Hatchi CAN live without Takumi it'll be hard but yeah she can pull it off. But Takumi I doubt he can live without her, Hatchi made a huge impact in his life, she gave something that he always yearned for. Which is unconditional true love. Yeah Takumi will go off and still be a playboy, but he will always feel it in his gut that he lost something good if Hatchi leaves him.

Basically Takumi is a god damn sexy sonovab*tch that we all love and hate.

well thought gentlewater..it was interesting to read, yet funny at the same time with those side comments briefly what I think is that Takumi does love Hachi, yet he cares deeply about Reira and that as shown in some frames simply breaks him apart..as you said I've never seen on Takumi such sad face expressions like in the recent chapters,he's clearly trying to solve all these problems the best he can..the bad part he's doing it miserably by cheating also as you said human relationships are so complex, that we can't really judge one just by looking at the small picture(I still hate Reira though...loneliness and just a weak personality don't give you the right to rely on others and destroy people's lives)...about the present Takumi he seems pretty obedient and nice and the way he looks at Hachiko is special(like with guiltness and sorrow...he knows he hurt her deeply *then why did you do it in the first place* )....I won't deny tthat a part of me wants them together cause I think the could work out their problems, but with the confident Hachi from the future...
note:I think I'm gonna be so sad when she'll find out about this...I wonder how, cause it's obvious that was the reason of their cold relationship from the future

I like your insight gentlewater and I agree that takumi and reira are the most piteful characters in this story and that hachi is sad by staying but also doing some good. It is clear that takumi NEEDS hachi b/c she provides him with the emotional and loving feelings he needed and and hachi has grown so much since the first chapter that I actually like her now. The problem is were all human beings and we are prone to make mistakes even in our own lives. We are not perfect and that what ai yazawa is conveying in NANA that not all things work out the way we hope for but we can make best what we got. Hachi is trying really hard in her relationship with takumi and I give her applauses for that b/c she never did that b4. As for reira what a sad human being indeed she doesn't have a very healthy relationship and feels lonely enough to buy shin my lover!!!!!!!!
Even so during that relationship she tried for them to work but in the end it ended in failure and went back to takumi side. As for takumi another sad human being for sleeping around with so many women even so I was willing to over look that seeing how in the last chapter he LOOKED like he was making progress in his relationship with hachi but unfortunetly his desire to help others and the TWO most important women his life will eventually end in failure and misery especially for hachi I hope she doesn't find out while she is pregnant. Either way I'm rooting for hachi to see how she resolves her marriage with him and if she decides to stay no other choice but to support her in that decision to stay with him and fight together. True she deserves better BUT remember in the beginning she was selfish and only cared about herself now we see she is truly caring for another human being despite all his faults and I'm happy to see she growing up to be a fine woman ^_^
Lets watch her progress shall we

lol..considering the fact that's she's having a child and married to (i don't know how to describe him best) takumi, no wonder she progress.lol.. and if you're talking to about reira well, too bad she's not the main character and only her role is to add flavor to the story... too bad it's getting bitter now..i hope it will be sweeter next chapter..oh i'm talking nonsense here..
