Is Discipline disappearing?

Just recently I read a number of reports that strongly, leads me to believe that, people in America, as well as a number of other countries, are starting to diplay less and less discipline, and will power, as well as shame and the will for self improvement (discipline being used as an umbrella term for the rest) , and are starting show more and more laziness and carelessness

For instance, I read not more than a week ago, that Americans have continued to get fatter, and that no state has had a significant number of people lose weight as of now, of course I didn't find it too unbelievable, as I look around different neighborhoods I can't help but notice, that no children are playing outside, or teens working out, yet I do find them all pigging out at McDonalds, and at the local video game stores. Also I constantly see children disrespecting their parents as well as teachers, which is something I could never comprehend, I was raised to respect elders, no matter how much I did not like them

Another example, 90 out of every 100 Anericans own a gun, at first I was very proud of this number, but it soon dawned on me, that means 90% of us are too lazy to learn how to kill with our own hande, or even knives, I wouldn't let my son near a gun until has an expert at both

There are many more stories that could have made that small list I just gave, such as those 2 parents who decided to give up on parenting and raising their own kids, just to play Dungeons and Dragons

Do you think discipline is disappearing?
if so, why do you think people would want do away with it?
Have you lost or are losing your discipline?
What do you think of these trends as well as others you have witnessed and have caused you to believe in the afffirmative of the question?
if you can think of a solution, please share it
yeah, that'd be great

I believe that discipline is slowly but surely fading away from us (not me of course), and the reasons for this decline are very clear to me, for one thing, parents aren't tough enough anymore since spanking kids has been deemed "child abuse", as a child I grew up with a Marine NCO as a father, and a domineering mother with a banhsee like yell and a Belt happy hand, if my parents ever thought me or my sisters were getting lazy, they'd drag our asses outside with balls and other sports equipment for at least 2 hours and never allowed us back in, until they were satisfied, if my mom thought we were outside being lazy, she'd come out with a belt, and a look on her face that would scare Satan into submission

We never got fat or out of shape, because my parents would never allow it, and personally if I woke up in the morning over 300 pounds heavier, I'd blow my brains out, I've already got enough issues with my self esteem to have to put up with that too

Also my father was a whiz at Pacman and Space invaders before I was born, after I was born, he rarely even looked at a video game until I was 6 and he got me a Game boy for christmas, Life is all about priorities, as well as self control and self discipline, which seems to be lacking these days

EDIT--There are many other reasons for my belief, such as the tired, old and overused line of accepting people for what they are, which was originally used for racial, religious and homosexual tolerance

Hmmm
discipline in the u.k ..... there is none Im proud to have grown up in my area and yet I can't wait to leave just a few days maybe a week ago a local boy was shot...by youth's. Without discipline these thug's are appearing more and more although Im not one to say as my dad's said to me If it was back in the 50's when he was born half these children would have been beaten to death and they never had the time to be sitting around eating themselves to death. They where out helping there family's instead of sitting on some online game. So Im putting the blame down to the parents If you don't want to raise a child don't have one If you have it and can't cope call for help so much of the u.k tax pays cash goes to these single mums who are living in a paid for council flat with 12 kid's who are lucky to be looked after with some member or boyfriend of her's living there and she's still working but still gets benefits. As for fat people these days its just became normal seeing these huge women/men/children walking around in town eaating some big mac meal or something.

so what

what does owning a gun have to do with being lazy. fist fighting in a gun fight will get you killed and seeing as most robbers or rapist carry arms with them i doubt i will sit there and state that i have a black belt in karate.

plus what does weight have to do with discipline. sure people in america are more over the weight line than anywhere else but there are several causes other than bad parenting.

if this was more focused on how kids have no self control or self respect for their elders than i would agree with you but all this is you stating how your childhood you were beaten if you didnt go outside and since no one else is like that then there must be something wrong. i for one am a guy who is indoors more than out but guess what im not fat and i love learning new stuff on the computer and i also respect my elders and others around me.

just because every one else didnt have the same childhood as you does not me discipline is going away. discipline is going away as children become even more and more out of control when they dont get there way and the parents feed their children with anything they want. being over weight has nothing to do with bad parenting.

Hmm so If there is an over weight 5-11 Its there own fault...some how I think that parents who had discipline would feed there children differently. Also discipline and being over weight is linked because if you had discipline you would stop killing your own body and go on a diet.

Well the not respecting the elders and the lack of self discipline were some of the many reasons I did not add, but your right, I was just stating where I developed self control and discipline, sorry about the mix up

I think a lot of the problems you are addressing have to do with being lazy, or having things just handed to them. I see what you are saying, but I think it's more parenting methods in general.

Something pertaining to discipline would be a study like this...
Kids from Christian Schools are more likely to have underage sex, take illegal drugs, and steal than public school children. I've experianced this personally, I believe the theory behind it is that once the kids have no control, they abuse their freedoms.

I got a big packet on it in my sociology class, but I can try to post a link if I find one.

i visited a 'charter' school(bunch of delinquents and bullies..drop outs) at south carolina once, it's the worse school i ever seen with my bare eyes.. the ppl keep throwing bunch of papers(and keep elevating to some harder stuff) around classrooms, cursing at teachers, and most surpricing stuff i saw was seeing two pregnant teens that are my age (literaly OMG)... recently heard that police went there three days in rows to the school for fighting.. school just started like a week ago..

im glad im not in that school...lol
