Just recently I read a number of reports that strongly, leads me to believe that, people in America, as well as a number of other countries, are starting to diplay less and less discipline, and will power, as well as shame and the will for self improvement (discipline being used as an umbrella term for the rest) , and are starting show more and more laziness and carelessness

For instance, I read not more than a week ago, that Americans have continued to get fatter, and that no state has had a significant number of people lose weight as of now, of course I didn't find it too unbelievable, as I look around different neighborhoods I can't help but notice, that no children are playing outside, or teens working out, yet I do find them all pigging out at McDonalds, and at the local video game stores. Also I constantly see children disrespecting their parents as well as teachers, which is something I could never comprehend, I was raised to respect elders, no matter how much I did not like them

Another example, 90 out of every 100 Anericans own a gun, at first I was very proud of this number, but it soon dawned on me, that means 90% of us are too lazy to learn how to kill with our own hande, or even knives, I wouldn't let my son near a gun until has an expert at both

There are many more stories that could have made that small list I just gave, such as those 2 parents who decided to give up on parenting and raising their own kids, just to play Dungeons and Dragons

Do you think discipline is disappearing?
if so, why do you think people would want do away with it?
Have you lost or are losing your discipline?
What do you think of these trends as well as others you have witnessed and have caused you to believe in the afffirmative of the question?
if you can think of a solution, please share it
yeah, that'd be great

I believe that discipline is slowly but surely fading away from us (not me of course), and the reasons for this decline are very clear to me, for one thing, parents aren't tough enough anymore since spanking kids has been deemed "child abuse", as a child I grew up with a Marine NCO as a father, and a domineering mother with a banhsee like yell and a Belt happy hand, if my parents ever thought me or my sisters were getting lazy, they'd drag our asses outside with balls and other sports equipment for at least 2 hours and never allowed us back in, until they were satisfied, if my mom thought we were outside being lazy, she'd come out with a belt, and a look on her face that would scare Satan into submission

We never got fat or out of shape, because my parents would never allow it, and personally if I woke up in the morning over 300 pounds heavier, I'd blow my brains out, I've already got enough issues with my self esteem to have to put up with that too

Also my father was a whiz at Pacman and Space invaders before I was born, after I was born, he rarely even looked at a video game until I was 6 and he got me a Game boy for christmas, Life is all about priorities, as well as self control and self discipline, which seems to be lacking these days

EDIT--There are many other reasons for my belief, such as the tired, old and overused line of accepting people for what they are, which was originally used for racial, religious and homosexual tolerance

I recently rediscovered what the word discipline means. right now, I'm currently overweight but not obese. I see people in this country who struggle to breath just by walking; and I thought to myself in order to avoid that situation I would become stronger in mind, body, and Spirit. so I began to combine eating healthier foods with working out,and little by little my physique is improving. by Spirit I mean devotion to one's God. By mind I mean to increase one's knowledge, no matter how painful the information would be. through discipline I could, and will achieve all of these goals.

I couldn't be bothered to read through more than half the thread, but as always Abel, your first post is written from the narrow perspective of a rejected little baby. How about thinking of discipline as something that is only worth a damn as long as you chose to have it for a valid reason and not a mysterious virtue.

Discipline taught through school or by abusive parents can't really mean anything, because the objectives are not the ones of an individual. Fatness is not a crime, moral dependence such as yours is much closer to being a crime. You never learn how to see things from a non ridiculed-albino-wants-to get-revenge-view. You're always morally lame and imbecile like that. From my point of view, only the discipline you taught yourself, because you found it a necessity counts. You think holding a gun as long as you don't know how to kill with bare hands is lazy? What's lazier than killing, because you don't know how to settle a conflict by other (more subtle) means?

Oh and btw, discipline hasn't disappeared recently, that term isn't appropriate here. if you're talking about manners, they might have become less important with the changes in education.

I don't remember putting the word "rejected" in my post, or even alluding to the word, I didn't even mention albino in there, and I don't know where you got the word revenge, if I had given into my erge for revenge I'd be in prison now for taking out half of my 4th grade class, I DID learn discipline for a valid reason, to keep my ass from being kicked as a child, discipline almost became a survival instinct, I learned that the wrong actions can have serious consequences, and that no amount of temptation was a good reason to commit the wrong actions, and being smacked in the legs and ass with a belt ain't child abuse, throwing a kid through the wall, is abuse

Fatness may not be a crime, if it was this country would be in serious trouble, it is, however, disgraceful, it's a sign of weakness and a lack of self control , I've spent much of my life preparing to be a soldier, how would I look in Marine dress blues, weighing in at 400 pounds, talking about fighting, pathetic, even for cilivians with no good excuse to be obese, it doesn't make sense to me, as to why a whole nation would just let itself go, and settle for the bare minimum, and cover it up with tired, lame excuses, and why I should risk my ass to fight for these people who seem so intent on self destruction

I used my discipline as I got older, as a form of perseverence against the limitations I was born with, I've never let myself hang to sorry excuses, even if they were made up or justified by others, doctors told me I wouldn't be able to drive when I was 14, earned my license not too long after , My parents simply instilled a "base", I got older they let up, and I did the rest of the work, I came out as a tough, capable, street smart individual, because of my experiences

holy shit that was hella creepy. hahahahaha

my 2 cents, discipline does seem to be fading as most parents are afraid of a visit from your friendly neighborhood social worker slamming them with child abuse. kids nowadays get away with so many things that i would never have when i was growing up. i got the shit beat out of me by my dad but only when i did things which were wrong like almost burning down the apartment we lived in. or breaking windows. stuff like that. i seem to have grown up all right and not scarred or traumatized. every kid is different i guess. if i ever have a kid, he'll get his deserved punishment if he ever does anything wrong, thats about it.

the problem is parents teachers and others focus too much on knowledge and forget all about wisdom. although wisdom cannot be taught one can be lead in the right direction. think about it which is more dangerous an unwise person with the knowlegde to make a gun or a wise person with a nuke? yes i think discipline is fading but only because too few people are wise enough too understand why.

Yes, I do..I'm 17 so I'm juss a few years ahead of the newcomers, but from what I see and hear from younger kids actually disgusts..It's like they think they're all Mike Jones or someone..they watch too much tv and eat too much and look horrible..ugh and are beginning to get out of hand..I would love to go on tv and demonstrate on how to smack your kid or how to discipline your child if they ever disrespect you or any other elder..I mean i have a foul mouth but i dont mouth off to my elders i give them respect and all the kids these days are really idiotic

Because they're lazy bastards who don't deserve to have their children
how hard is it to teach them not to cuss and to respect elders? Friggin slap the kid
screw the laws that say you can't smack your kid
if they don't like it too bad rite?

No, I'm actually becoming more mature due to joining ROTC last year at my high school
and i show more respect for elders and I'm actually cuttin down on my cussing xD
The idiots on tv..wit all that YOYOYOYO shit wit grills and money and from da hood are making our kids dumb..
fuck show some damn barnie not lil jockstrap and lil scrappy doo
Slap the kid if they get out of hand and or act bad
Put some soap in their mouths they won't die..
Put chilli peppers if they cuss or act bad
Spank em
Get out the belt
Make em do chores
Make them exercise/join a sport

I remember the old days when I used to go outside and play football wit all my buddies everyday
I went to that same neighborhood a few weeks ago NO ONE
dead silence and they put a stupid lil jungle jim over the field so no one can play there anymore
No one goes out anymore no one believes in soccer football any sport that much
I see kids wit portable video games at school playing and then in pe those same people complain that they're tired..It's a disease
Kid's of the near future are gonna grow to be disrespectful uneducated
foul mouthed FAT lazy parents that are juss going to infect the world more soon you're going to hear people on tv talkin about banning sports due to injuries and harsh labor..
TO HELL WITH THOSE LAWS SMACK YOUR KID
SHOW THEM THE WAY YOU WERE RAISED DON'T BE SCARED TO DO IT
please don't let them turn out to be like president bush
we already have one idiot leading our cruddy country we don't need anymore

and no need to beat em
A slap is good and a couple spankings
AND EXPLAINING what they did wrong would be good and a timeout after that severe slapping/spanking/chilli/soap in mouth would be great too
oh and a grounding
damn im mean but hey thats how i was raised lucky i was good xD

oh and a good way to have a good kid is to spend time wit em
show them affection n all that crud
not hard to raise a child into a spiffywonderful outstanding person

But the adults are babying kids more and more.

Yeah, my aunt is doing that to my little cousin, I swear....I just want to punch that bitch in the face. When she deserves to be beaten for something, she always says "Awww....Don't hit her, she's just a baby". She is in fucking kindergarden now, and my aunt gives her everything she wants. She's gonna end of going through life thinking that everything is gonna go her way >_>

HAHAHAHAHAA punch a lil kid in the face classic xD
that's a lil too extreme doe..juss kinder
you can help by teaching the younger one how to be good and explain to her mom that what she is doin is wrong and isn't helping the kid out at all..
if she doesn't listen den
that's the mom's problem not yours rite =]
by the time all the madness happens you'll be long gone so chill

I honestly do not care about other people's children, or the way they discipline them. It's their lives for crying out loud. Stop caring about it and get off your 'I was properly disciplined' high horse.

actually it is our problem nowadays
cause those younger ones are going to be the future of this country
But since you're one of the idiots who has their head so far up their arse you're blind
you don't see whats goin on and you're in your own little world
heres a couple questions for you
would you bother saving an asshole??
would you give a group of foul mouth kids good service at a store??
"minor" problems like disciplining a child have horrible outcomes and it applies to daily life situations..jobs..school..so on a child should be disciplined to help keep this world alive and it would help out a lot cause we already got a fat headed president..do you really want another one..if you're not in the u.s. then would you want an idiot for a president..i think not
Please bear with what i said and absorb what everyone else is saying

Sadly, discipline is gradually disappearing. I won't be surprised if one day, it's no longer part of people's vocabularies. :|

The world lacks DISCIPLINE. I have no discipline anymore because SOMEONE introduced computers to me when I was 6 and no one stopped me or anything... Now I'm probably glued to the computer for the rest of my life... -.- I have no self control because no one taught me... -.-
