ok.... i hate it when people call themselves american(i mean american as in people from north and south america... not usa).... while theyre not.... i mean.. from what i know they are not real american citizens.... the real ones are the native americans that were conquered by their ancestors.. so what makes those people think that theyre american?... because theyre born in america?...

I think people should call themselves by what race they are. To Easterners we are all American but to ourselves we have our individual races and go by them accordingly. I've have never heard someone in America call themselves American. They just say what their nationality is. But lets say an American leaves the country to travel, to the rest of the world they call themselves American for an introduction to where they are from. To go even futher they might specify their nationality if needed.

I've never heard of that. What south American people you know call themselves American?? I don't know any? Maybe they say cuase they are born in America and they want others to know that they are legall.

As for the word American it was given to us by the Portuguese.

That's a good question and honestly I don't know but I am guessing
what makes Americans American is the pride of being from or born in the United States.

You're right about the term "American" standing for both North and South
but most people don't realize that.

people overemphasized USA as the only country where americans lived in because of the "AMERICA" word itself from the name.......
while other countries have other names....
lol......some people don't realize that......

mexicans are still americans
chileans are still americans
peruvians are still americans
brazilians are still americans
ETC.....

i guess people might want to have themselves educated first....
even americans who lived in usa are too proud to denote themselves as the only american country there is.....
but hey......they don't actually.....know what they're saying.......^_^

Keep in mind, we're all using the English language right now; the names we've used on the native people AREN'T their actual names, so how can we argue that they're the actual "Americans" when they're not Americans?

anyways, that aside, yes if you want to be strict; NONE of us are "Americans" after all, our history and crap doesn't trace back to "America" only the native people are actual natives here. but if you know any better in Geo or history class, its actually suspected that the native people were from Russia not really from "here", all humans if you use your logic are probably descence of the "one" colour then we spread around the world thousands or millions of years ago thus changing our skin colour; the funny thing is, languages normally have something in common, for example most languages have the "ma" sound for "mother" and some have the "pa" sound for "father".

so normally people call themselves according to their,

1. Nationality
2. Skin Colour
3. Blood lin origin

My self personally, I'm a Chinese-Canadian, and I wasn't even BORN in Canada, but my Nationality is Canadian and my blood line Origin is Chinese >_>;

Personally I say call my self American first then my ethnicity is Hispanic. To me it means a to be an American you are be born in the USA, but I also believe that an immigrant who moves here and loves this country then they are Americans as well. There are many ethnic groups in this country I love known as the USA, but when we unite we are Americans.

Anyone from the continents of North or South America are in fact, Americans. Just as anyone living in Europe, is a European. That is a fact, and really can't be argued.

However, if you are asking why people from other countries claim they are American, not for location reasons, but because of the United States' culture- that can spark some conversation. Though, I must admit, I don't know anyone who does that.
